Will my A7V support an XP 1600+?

I have an ASUS A7V KT133 (not KT133A) with the original BIOS version (forgot what version, I think its 1004).

Will my motherboard support an XP1600+ CPU? My friend is buying me that CPU to replace my aging 850mhz T-Bird as a gift. If so, what do I need to get the XP CPU to run in my mobo? Do I need to upgrade the BIOS? Can I just pop in the CPU and it'll run at its advertised clockspeed or am I gonna have to mess with DIP switches and stuff in my mobo?

Thanks everyone!

Yes and no, the chip will physicaly run, but since the A7V has the ViaKT133 chipset you won't be able to run it at the 266 FSB. So without modifying the chip (or overclocking) the chip will run at 1050 Mhz insted of 1400 Mhz.

I have the A7V with the latest BIOS (version 1008). In the BIOS, it does allow you to set the FSB to 133Mhz (and the memory to 133). I have no idea how fast is the AGP/PCI is running if FSB = 133. Does anyone know?

Ew so the XP1600+ will only run at 1050mhz instead of 1400mhz? There's no way I can get around this? Bah...!

What about a regular 1.4ghz T-Bird (NonXP)?

You can get around this but you have to overclock the system. Other than that I'd look for a Thunderbird that runs on the 200FSB (if you get one with 266 you'll have the exact same problem). Or you could save some money and go with a Duron, they are slow, but cost less money.

bargainshopper: its true the board has the setting for a fsb of 133mhz, (just like some of todays overclocking boards have fsb settings of over 200mhz) but the fsb is only designed to run 100mhz max, and the kt133 chipset is well known for very poor fsb overclocking (anywhere between 105mhz to 115, but never 133mhz)

Comp625: if you unlock the xp1600+ you can run it 1300mhz by manually setting the dipswitches to 13x (the 12.5x setting on that board has been remapped to a 13x multiplier if you have any bios version newer then 1007)

if you set the fsb at 103mhz and the multiplier at 13x you will get around 1333mhz or an amd pr rating of 1500+

No, the A7V will not run at 133FSB. I know it is an option on the board, but it won't even POST. Think of it this way: You can put a 200 MPH speedometer in a Geo Metro, but is it ever going to reach that speed? Not unless you push it over a VERY high cliff.

Heh my A7V won't even post with an FSB of 110 or so. 104 is the highest that it's willing to go while maintaining a degree of stability.

sell the a7v, pc133sdram and tbird 850 as combo at ebay
and you can get a nice mobo from$50(ECS)
or $80$ Shuttle. Invest $20 you can get EPOX w/kt333
for $99. if you want more there are alot for more than $100
Abit, Asus, Soyo.

but if you still want to use the pc133 your choice is
limited to Asus A7A266 or ECS K7S5a, than you have
DDR slot for future upgrade.
