Will my 5-year old motherboard take SATA II disks via enclosure?

I have 5-year old PC with old motherboard (Gigabyte GA-8IRXP). I want to get one or two of those 1TB Seagate SATA II drives and connect them via enclosure to the old PC. I want to use the PC as 24/7 server. Will this set-up work without patching the motherboard? What about Os-wise? The PC is loaded with Windows XP Pro SP2.

Well, that brings up my second question. What is the 3.5" HDD enclosure that provides that best cooling features that help sustain 24/7 use of hard disk? What chipset do you recommend for 3.5" HDD enclosure?

Thanks for advising!!!

If your mb supports USB2 or firewire and you use a comparable enclosure, it will work. If not there are very inexpensive add-in cards that will supply the interface.

Can't recommend anything though, as the only enclosure I have is from an old Maxtor external.

Buy a $10 USB2 PCI card or a $20 eSATA PCI card and you're in business. Plug it in, ensure your drivers are installed (the CD will come with your purchase) and you're done.
