Will MP3 go the way of the 8-track?

All this time spent ripping, encoding, downloading, organizing, ID3 tag labeling, etc -- what will happen if in the future we will have a new format to deal with? Should we feel like we have to convert or re-encode our music to this format?

And all these higher and higher bitrates, should we be encoding all of our music at 320kbps to feel that our audio will be up to quality in the future?

Also, how much better do you think audio compression technology can get in the future?

someday you wont even need to download music
just say the name of the song you want and it will start playing😀
hopefully...

Umm...as long as you have WinAMP, why would you have to convert MP3s to a new format?

Eventually the MP3 format will die but my hope is for an open-standards replacement. I will not touch anything from MS and avoid anything from the RIAA control freaks that doesn't consider fair use.

Some better compression schemes will come out, but your existing MP3 will still sounnd exactly as good as they do now. If you rip at 256-320 and are happy with the quality there will be no reason to re-encode just to get the size down to (say) 224, especially since your jukebox server will have 1,000 GB of space by then.

Unlike with MS WMA, MP3 source code is available so people will always be able to create decoders for your existing MP3s, unless of course MS and/or the RIAA succeed in paying off congress to make owning a non copy-protected PC a crime. (MS is secretly in favor of copy-protection since (a) it would likely be tied to Windows OSes for creation, distribution, and playback -and- (b) would require a copy-protected format like WMA.)

Like captain Picard does 🙂

Who cares about size? MP3s are virtually perfect quality already, the only reason I could see moving from it is for Multichannel audio, but that doesn't affect your currect collection

mp3's might end up being replaced by ogg vorbis. but if they're not, i can see them being around for another couple years.

Nope. The only thing that might become popular in conjunction with the mp3 is wma. Just like divx and vcds are now obsolete, rght? There is just now super vcd...just like there is mp3 pro and vbr mp3. No, I think that mp3 is here to stay.

I don't think the mp3-listening public will accept any newfangled format which has DRM built-in. Mp3 is "good enough", and you can listen to it anywhere. (PC, portable mp3 player, DVD player, car stereo..) The recording industry can't just wipe out that installed base with the wave of a magic wand (the CEA has a lot more $ than the RIAA).

Edit: CEA = Consumer Electronics Association

when dvd-a or something better finally comes out. then we crack the encryption and rip super multichannel mp3s!! that or if storage becomes so insanely cheap and huge that wasting time and quality through compression becomes silly.

mp3 is not by any means old. any non lamer knows that the "lame" encoder just keeps getting better. with vbr you can get very good quality for under 200kbs. only now are portable mp3 devices coming out that have enough space for useful collections of music. we've got 5-20GB portables out, once 40+GB ipods are out it will be heaven🙂 entire record collections in your pocket, now that is power.
