Just curious b/c I'm thinking of turning a 386 into a router or atleast part of my network. Will most any type of network card work in it? I guess I'd have to install linux or similar type of OS in it.
If it fits in a slot it will work. Since it's a 386, you probably are limited to ISA slots, which are fine. You should be able to find an ISA NIC for under $10.
Get a common brand so that you'll have more compatability with the hardware and software. I use these old school 3com ISA Etherlink 3 cards that are dated 1992 to 1995 and they work in every machine and operating system without additional drivers. And they're jumperless. You can get them for like 5-10 bucks used. They're bulletproof.
