Will moderate Republicans follow Crist to the Democratic Party?

Charlie Crists example of a moderate Republican who couldn't win his parties nomination due to the tea party came full circle yesterday as Crist switched to the Democratic party in an expected run for the Governorship of Florida.

Will other moderate Republicans who face defeat by the radical right wing of the Republican party become at least nominal Democrats, or will they try and run as Independents, or will they just sacrifice all their values and join the right wing crazies?

Should the Dems welcome Republicans who switch parties or should they just relegate them to the trashbin of history?

Problem with both parties is that they're too socially conservative.

Until that changes, morality legislation will continue to plague the US and polarize its people.

In fact, morality legislation polarizes the US far more than any other topic.

The moderate Republicans were the same people who were Democrats in the 1960s and earlier. There was a big shift (especially in the south) in the 1960s from Democrats to Republicans. Heck, even Texas voted heavilly for Democrats until 1968 when Humphrey beat Nixon in Texas. These ex-Democrats would eventually find out that they didn't fit in their new-found Republican party. I wouldn't be surprized at all if there was a big shift back to the Democratic party by the 2020 time frame.

Democrats should welcome them back with open arms. Democrats should become the fiscal moderate, social liberal party they once were (until the blue-dog-like Democrats bailed in the 1960s).

Nah, I don't think so

"Charlie Crist's first official act as a Democrat was to tell a lie about why he is now pretending to be one," the Florida GOP said in a statement early Saturday. "The truth is that this self-professed, Ronald-Reagan Republican only abandoned his pro-life, pro-gun, conservative principles in 2010 after he realized that Republicans didn't want to send him to Washington D.C. as a senator, especially after he proved he couldn't do the job as governor."

Rick Wilson, a Florida-based Republican consultant, predicted that Crist would have to spend the next 14 months explaining how his switch to Democrat was something beyond just his own political ambitions.

Just because you are pro gun or pro life does not mean you are a current Republican. Today's Republican party is about burying your head in the sand and ignoring the very real problems we face in order to promote policies that have been proven ineffective (trickle down economics...lol wtf, "small government" - the big lie, et al) and create policy based on their worship of "God" (pro life, drug war, etc etc) instead of what is best for the people.

Crist's change is a gimmick to be used for his own personal gain. If you believe he has changed ideologically think again - in fact I would wager (as with most politicians) what he actually believes has nothing to do with what he says or does publicly.

Democrats were the party of bigotry and intolerance in the past. It wasn't very long ago that their were places were democrats would not register minorities, but republicans would register them.

Let us not forget the party responsible for ending school prayer, mandatory jury trials, legal abortions, and most other fundamental rights is NOT democrats, but the Republicans.

Not to say the Republican party today isn't full of corruption and evil, because it is.

Agreed. At least most conservatives (other than bible thumpers) vote based on economic reasons.

Ask a retarded woman anything about politics and the only topics of conversation she can spew out of her retarded mouth is FEMINISM OPPRESSION ABORTION BLACK PEOPLE.

Yes, yes, have fun with your right to abort YOUR mistake - I'm sure it will be really handy dandy when this entire country is broke

Can you list 10 differences between the two parties off the top of your head ? Probably not, him switching to the Democrats is like changing your car's color, its the same damn thing when you get down to it.

What an incredibly ignorant thing to say considering the two parties can't agree on a single fucking thing for the past 4 years.

Oh no.. they do agree on quite a bit.... in private. How they act in public and the partisan games they play when voting on bills is an entirely different matter.
