will microsoft stop activating XP when longhorn comes out?

someone on another message board said that MS is planning on halting product activation once Longhorn is available, to force you to upgrade if you need to re-install. is there any truth to that? is that even legal?

i would think they would continue activation XP for as long as they continue support for the OS. the scheduled end of support for XP is after the expected launch date of longhorn.

With longhorn not due for release until 2006, and Windows XP with such a large userbase, along with the fact that Microsoft is providing longer and longer product support times, I wouldnt be surprised to see XP support around untill 2010 at least.

Consider that XP has been out for nearly three years now, and still a large portion of users are on 98 or 2kpro..

Meh just my opinion.

some peeps will never upgrade because they don't feel spending the money is necessary and I don't blame them thought

Microsoft said somewhere that once they are done with XP, they will provide information on how to avoid activation.

well I didn't believe it from this guy cuz that sounded clueless but he insisted it was the case. so I figured I'd ask some others who might know what they were talking about.
I hope their information on avoiding activiation isn't "reinstall every 29 days" LOL

Yeah let Microsoft discontiue activation on all those 1-2 gighertz machines with 512meg of ram and 60 gig hardrives to make people get Longhorn with minimum specs of 4000+CPU/2gigs ram/1 terabyte hardrive.:laugh::beer:[/quote]
