...when the next iPhone OS has multitasking and Windows Phone 7, which comes out in the fall, doesn't? It seems like they are copying Apple verbatim but they are always playing catch-up.

Neither is out yet.

I'll wait and see what happens.

But would be very shortsighted of MS to not have that basic function.

The pre and pixi both have multitasking yet people still buy the iphone. As long as the phone offers what they want they'll buy it even if it doesn't allow true multitasking.

Funny thing about MS is that they are big enough and have their fingers in enough pies that they don't really need to get things right the first time. Yeah they copy other companies who get the idea first and do it poorer than they do but they just muscle their way into a market and in due time by the time ver 2 or 3 is out they already have like 40% of the market share no matter what. LOL

I don't see why it wouldn't support multitasking. The new Win 7 phones sound pretty interesting as well. Not so much the OS itself, but the hardware and multimedia capabilities that Microsoft is requiring for phones to use it. The specs on these phones are pretty incredible.

Apple's proved time and time again that marketing and software are what really matters, though. The new Win 7 phones could be technically superior to the iPhone in most every way and still not catch on. Zune HD has some pretty nice specs and features, but stuff like that only appeals to us geeks. Obviously it hasn't cut significantly into Apple's market share in PMPs.

Did apple have egg on their face when the droid came out with multitasking?

eh? both apple and windows phone 7 are copies of the original palm OS, so i don't think either of these companies can claim to be leading or catchup. Regardless, iPhone can only do a single task at a time largely due to the limitation of the processor, despite whatever workarounds exist for it.

I don't understand why all the restrictions against multitasking. I think the better approach would be to limit the amount of programs able to run to an arbitrary number, say 3. When you want to open program 4, the OS asks you to double tap a program to close first.

For some reason I think you're full of shit. You would be absolutely pissed off if you had to choose to close a program in order to open another one.

Winmo 6.5 does multitasking very well on my Touch Pro2, I suspect the reason that Winmo 7 and the iphone don't has to do with security or anti-piracy somehow, not the power of the processor.

Damn you mircosoft. I wanted a geniune windows mobile phone. I dont want a dumbassed apple clone.

First they had to dumb down and ruin Windows (Vista), now WinMobile.

I hope I live long enough to see the day apple goes completely bankrupt for this outrage!

Good news is that they just renamed it as "Windows Phone 7". They dropped the "Series" from the name.

I think you would be horribly annoyed with a phone that ran something like a normal version of windows. It would be ridiculous to try and use without a keyboard and mouse.

No, the people who will have egg on their faces are those that buy the phone even though for the past 3 years they have moaned about the lack of it on the iphone. Oh yeah, those would be the same people who said no business person would ever buy a phone that didn't have a removable battery, which the latest rumors claim that Win7 phones will lack as well. lol

I don't care as much about the multitasking as much as the usb access, external storage card, app market restrictions.

I think they should give developers access to allow multitasking but tell them to put their program to sleep properly if needed so it doesn't hog cpu. Lots of programs running in the background, for no reason, is probably why WM phones may feel slow after a while.

The lovely thing is the Windows 7 phone will basically be an iPhone with a less intuitive UI and an app store that will never be close to as good as what Apple has. But I still see many people touting how it's soooooo much better than an iPhone. Even with it having a closed OS, and you more than likely won't ever be able to sync it with anything but the shitty MS software. I have a WM 6.1 phone and I FUCKING HATE MS's piss poor excuse for PC software that interfaces with my phone.

With that said I see the anti Apple people raving about how this W7 phone is superior in every possible way.

Obviously you haven't had the experience of using iTunes and an iPhone ... ugh. I prefer ActiveSync, because at least I can use bluetooth or wifi.

My intention is to get a WinMo7 phone - I like how they it will work with my 360 & Win7 PC. The UI looks awesome, much better than the iPhone - then again, we'll never know what WinMo7 will look like until we get a final product. The phone portion of the OS wasn't even complete when it was announced. If I couldn't jailbreak, I'm not sure I'd have stuck with the iPhone at this point ...

it's not a limitation of the processor. same damn thing in the Pre and Droid. It's purely Apple wanting to control the user experience. And for 90% of the ppl who have iPhones, it works perfectly fine. One might argue the Pre's slowness is because of supporting multiple apps, and to an extent, yes. But it's clearly also no where near as optimized as iPhone OS.

Also, check the jailbreakers out, seems to be working for them. Multitasking was a control move. And for Apple's original target, it really didn't matter because everyday people didn't give a damn.

No, its because Apple and MS believe that that average user is too stupid to manage their applications, and will complain when the phone becomes sluggish from having too many applications open. So they limit it to basically 1 so the phone can remain snappy.

And this is exactly how they ruined Windows itself. Vista was designed for idiots in mind, Win7 is an extension of this idiocy and "dumbed down, no power optioned, no dos support, blah blah blah" lack of control taken out of the hands of users because too many high school dropouts (with college educations if you know what I mean) screw things up royally then blame MS.

So now Windows Mobile will be dumbed down for idiots, follow the "AP" model, LACK A SYTLUS (yes that pisses me off royally, no I dont want to use my greasy assed KING SIZE fingers on a damn touchscreen), and have all the stupid, oversized, cutesy icons that dance and jiggle.
