Will Microsoft EVER fix the annoying "Can't find Server" title bug in IE?

It's really annoying. If a page fails to load, and then you refresh it and it loads fine, the title doesn't update, but continues to say "Server not found". It's really annoying when you're trying to find a specific webpage on the taskbar (usually something that starts with Anan...) and all you see is "Serv..."

Hehe, I could open a support issue with MS for this. I have access to their highest level (read most expensive) of support. In fact, I have opened a bunch of issues with MS and sometimes they even confirm they have a bug. Shocking.

What kind of a stupid question is that? The page has a title. IE doesn't display it. Is it supposed to be fixed by a counterstrike patch or something?

That annoys me as well!

Other annoying things in IE:

1. When IE is first opened, Tools > Internet Options is not available until a web page is loaded (if its slow loading or its waiting for a response from a site that's offline, you have to hit the stop button before you can use the menus)

2. Script debugging should be disabled by default! I don't want to debug another company's scripts and I highly doubt the rest of the <160 IQ population does either.

3. The persolized icons in the favorites menu for each site are "lost" after I clear the history... sigh

4. No popups, No popups, No popups! (without my approval that is, example me taking an action such as clicking a link)

5. And a web site should not be able to change the size of the window or abolish the toolbar or disable me from exiting IE!

When a page cannot be displayed, the first bullet says to REFRESH the page in the verbiage. In some instances, this is not linked for you to refresh. It SHOULD be hyperlinked for a refresh. Something to do with a .dll that fixes that. They should've fixed it in IE6, period... and they didn't.

Pics??

I have not seen Mozilla do this, but I will watch for it now.

Anybody else bugged by the "You are visiting a site outside of Hotmail. To return to Hotmail, close this browser window." frame on every hotmail link? I wrote about five e-mails to support asking how to remove the frame, not even a response back. :frown:

Hehe, I have no idea how much it costs my company each time an issue is opened. Or if that even matters in case we pay a flat rate for all issues over the year.

But it is fun having the ability to point at MS and say "Its a bug, fix it!" and not just complain on a message board about it.

Unfortuantely, as this bug does not aversly affect my clients, I am not justified in opening an issue. Unlike some of my other issues resulting in bad behavior of MS products that cause data loss for example.

For the doubters, here is how to reproduce this bug.

Create a website with just a simple html page. Just put text in there, nothing fancy. But make sure there is a TITLE tag.
Do not turn on the website, but point IE to where it is.
IE will then display "Cannot find server" yadda yadda yadda.
Turn on the website.
Now hit refresh in IE.
Your webpage will load but the TITLE bar will still say "Cannot find server", not the TITLE tag you put in.

Can you tell that I work in software support (writing patches, etc...) or what?

EDIT: Looking over it again, theres a typo.

I just tried to do this in Mozilla (v. 1.1) and it does not reproduce. You get an alert message stating "Connection refused" rather than a pseudo-webpage like IE displays.

Back in 1999, there was an article about this whole issue. MS explained that the frame is there to let users know they have to close that window to return to Hotmail - exactly what is explained by the verbiage they use. The real issue was that it's annoying. Developers of webpages can add a little javascript to get rid of that, but then EVERYONE would need to do it to every page rendered.

Anyway, not only do I find it annoying, but it messes with cookies. I can't even log into many sites if that frame is there. It won't accept my cookie or create one. Without the frame, I can login just fine. The other thing is that the URL is not reported the same. It's an extension of the hotmail URL - through a URL parameter, your page is loaded. How freakin annoying. Oh yes, when are they going to fix the "stay logged in until I log out" issue with Hotmail? It used to work fine and now it only works half the time.

Like I've always said, if you offer the feature, at least make it work. It's been 1.5 months since it was reported... and they said they were working on it.

To support my argument (I boxed out REFRESH, which SHOULD be highlighted/clickable).

Heh, I gave incredibly easy reproduce steps for this. Anyone with access to their own webserver (IIS or Apache or whatever) can do this easily.

Maybe the fact that everyone gave up on this thread so quickly is why MS doesn't fix it. Unless you make enough noise (or wave around enough cash), they don't care.
