will memory upgrade be enough?

No surprise to me, but Unreal II is taxing my system. I have a P4 1.5 Geforce 4200 128mb, and 384 rd ram. I can play it at 1024 res for the most part. However. the Cave map, the mission on the living planet had to be set down to 800 just to get through it. I can't tolerate the image quality loss of 16 bit. So I'm in a bit of a bind.

I'm thinking of going from 384 rd ram to 768. Will this help me get rid of the temporary 5-15 second freezing that sometimes occurs? I'm in no position to buy another computer for another 1.5 years.

Sounds like a game glitch more than anything else, but it could be you don't have enough ram on your video card to load textures.

He's got 128MB, that's plenty. UT2k3 is actually a pretty CPU intensive game, particularly if you are talking about single-player (just look at the botmatch benches). Increasing RAM may help, 512MB is pretty standard nowadays for gaming rigs. I haven't heard too much about UT2k3 being a memory hog, not like BF:1942 at least. More system RAM will certainly help though if your system is freezing b/c its accessing the swap file; more memory means it will be able to cache more of the textures for each map. If you're running XP, I would definitely get at least 512MB and go from there.

Oh yeah, operating system...Win 2k.

And chizow the problem is coming from Unreal II. My system was able to get through UT2003, except for the last map. But thanks for your reply, the swap files and more ram being able to handle the textures makes sense. The map I had most trouble with had all this swirling fog. Talk about extreme eye candy/atmosphere.

Most/all unreal engine baced games, are more CPU limited than Video,
Heres a few tips to smooth out your gameplay.
Switch off any 3D sound options in game, use software sound, cos its generally faster for some reason.
Reduce the number of/quality of shadows in game. Shadows take a big hit on your performance.
Reduce the visual detail quality settings.

More memory COULD help. i have 768mb of PC133 memory, and i usually have my swap file set to 128mb, with unreal2 i have to set it to 256 or i get a crash complaining about lack of virtual/physical memory!!!

Shouldn't you have your swap file set to 768MB or something larger than 128-256MB? I have 512MB RAM with swap file set to 768MB...with no problems.

Depends what OS really; I remember getting away with 256MB in 98SE and 2k w/out issue. XP is a WHOLE nother story though...bad things happen when I try limiting my swap in XP below 768MB, we'll see if 1024MB of TwinX resolves that issue 😉

This is how ive always set my swap file. I put in a number, that added to the physical memory makes up a gig. For example, if i had 256mb memory, i`d set it to 768 as well, making 1024.
The reason that i had it set to 128mb in the first place, is because ive been experimenting with the swap file over the last couple of weeks, and was upto testing 128mb. It seemed fine with my other games, like UT2003, ST BC, JK2 ect;
My original method always seemed best, for stability & performance.

Arnt we ment to me discussing eviltoons problems?
