Will McConnell and Republicans touch the third rail (Cut SS)?

I believe they are dumb enough to try.

Briefly watched a portion of a Fox interview with Trump. They mention deficits and right on queue he talks about cutting (Democrat's) spending. That's right Mr. President, helping people is a Democrat platform. Don't you forget it.

From the turtle himself......

Tax Cut
Republicans in December 2017 also passed a tax cut projected to add more than $1 trillion to the debt over a decade after leaders gave up on creating a plan that wouldn’t increase the debt under the Senate’s scoring rules.

At the time, McConnell told reporters, “I not only don’t think it will increase the deficit, I think it will be beyond revenue-neutral.” He added, “In other words, I think it will produce more than enough to fill that gap.”

But that was an entire 12 months ago....can't expect people suffering from short term memory loss to remember that.

Why aren't Democrats as good with beating Republicans over their heads with this.

Hey people for the third time Republicans cut taxes for the rich, claim they will generate more revenue. For the third time it blows up the deficit and now they want to come after SS and Medicare.

How many times do we have to fall for this?? Hell Democrats need to put this into ads now. Did Beta bring it up in his debate with Lyin' Ted?

They'd love to, but this is provided the Republicans still have control of both sides of Congress after November. If they don't, social security is safe until at least 2020.
Yea, I'm not putting a vote in. If the Republican had/have their way yes. But, we'll see. Normally, I would have said this is one of the dumbest political moves I've seen from Mitch commit in a long time. But, nothing makes any sense anymore in Trumplandia, so I don't know. At least he admitted to the open secret of how Republicans have been working to not only wreck anything that had to do with Obama, but theyre finally getting to stripping all of the gains made by FDRs New Deal. We're getting a deal all right.

I can see the pubs pulling a fast one if they lose control of the house or Senate during the lame duck session. Then blame the Dems and fall back into that oh so comfortable opposition party role they've perfected over the years.

You'd be pretty naive to think they wouldn't mitigate any impacts of the cuts for people 55 or older (their base) and ensure that young punk liberals bear all the costs (“oh I'm sorry you're supposed to rely on your 401k not SS!”.)

Safe bet as millennials are too angsty and uninterested to bother to vote.

Yes they will cut Social Security benefits but not in the way you think. Look for them to change the inflation calculation first and foremost, just like they did with their tax cut bill that's actually a stealth tax increase on the poor and middle class.

I suspect you're right. SS has already had stealth cuts, like raising the age of full retirement, forcing younger generations to work additional years.
I imagine they may make cuts by slowing payment growth or converting more SS payments into medicare payments.

1. When all you do is attack the other side, and your base just laps it up, then you aren’t held responsible for anything you do.
2. When the other side just destroys and breaks everything it comes across, you can end up spending all your time fixing what is broken, without getting a chance to improve anything.
3. See 1.

But, god forbid we increase the cap.

Didn't we get rid of that debt limit increase authorization nonsense?

Any potential of forced shutdowns in the future?

R pensioners aren't educated enough to recognize the threat to their own livelihood.

I have relatives that live off of ss and Medicare and voted Trump.

Warned them.

But they wanted their wall because of all the fucking Mexicans.

No wall, lots of debt, and knives are out for Medicare. Bravo.

Cut SS?
YES THEY WILL.

However....
They're little trick will be claiming cuts will not affect current SS seniors.
DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There IS NO WAY IN HELL America can sustain a TWO TIER social security system. NO WAY!

How republicans will sell this is telling the youth they no longer need to invest into SS. That SS will be optional.
Meaning more $$$ in their paychecks, and ignoring the future as if the youth will live forever AND keep working far beyond their 80's.

Republicans will make this attractive by selling their new SS system to the youth, once again pitting one group against another.
In this case, the youth against the old.
And after all, why should the youth be handing out freebies to those old people? They will say.

Yes, republicans will make it quite appealing for the youth to give up this current SS system, promising more wealth in their golden yours thru the stock market, and no doubt by creating some added scam republicans will come up with.
Full of empty promises.
Yet the youth will not realize they are in dire straights until its too late. When facing their golden years will lacking the gold part.
Too late once they face senior age.

Heck....
Republican will probably proclaim "senior citizen" a dirty word.
And convince the youth they never need worry about getting old.
Science and all to the rescue.

But if anyone thinks a two tier SS system is sustainable, think again.
At first, to sell the idea of revamped SS, which will actually be no more SS, republicans will promise current SS recipients that for them nothing will change.
Then come a congress or two later, we will hear "OMG.... we can't possibly keep that old SS system intact, so......"
Yes seniors, your SS will be taken away and god only knows what republicans will then have in mind.
Probably true death panels.
Republicans first termed the phrase DEATH PANELS, so they must have been envisioning the need for death panels all along.

And that would be easy to do.
Simply deny the elderly their healthcare that they need. Deny them their medications. Deny seniors access to affordable healthcare. And there you have it.
Senior will either die from lack of, or have no option but suicide.
And suicide will be an attractive option, considering the alternative, once republican also pass laws to not only allow assisted suicide nation wide but also encourage assisted suicide as an feasible option.

Oh people....
Donald Trump and his new America isn't done with you YET.....
These are evil people. Like biblical evil.
Like an evil humanity has never known before. And humanity has known a lot of evil throughout history.
But we haven't see nothin yet....
Stay tuned, if you dare.

I also think they're dumb enough to try. And unless something changes, it will happen. They'll blame the Democrats, and the core base will lap it up.

Just the fact they put it out by the Senate Majority Leader mere weeks before the election, shows how little intellectual respect they have for their voters.

They must be thinking "just how much bullshit can we shovel and keep these guys still eating?"

It's interesting they announce they want to cut popular programs such as Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid* only 3 weeks before the election.

Possible rationale:

So Trump can ride to the rescue and claim to stop it? He's done the same shit before. Float a stupid idea and then claim that he is a hero for not doing it. I can see the republicans working with him on this.

Otherwise, doesn't make much sense, people don't see Medicare and Social Security as "entitlements". After all, your paystub has them listed as separate deductions.

Or...It's reminding the billionaire donor class that they're seriously behind in Q3 fundraising and that the billionaires club needs to remember what's at stake in the election. The plutocrats have a chance to fundamentally change America's economy and society as they know it: the great regressive experiment.

Screw it, at this point I hope they do. (of course as others pointed out they'll only do it under cover of "bipartisanship", with zero tax increases. scumbags). I have more in my 401k than i'll ever get from SS, take every benefit away from those lower middle class trump-voting morons. I say we also give out free opioids to every rural district. I make enough to benefit from GOP screwing the poor to lower tax on high earners (of course not a whole lot, I'm not superrich..), and I'm done caring while poorer idiots vote trump, cruz, et al into office. They want pain, then let the GOP give it to them. I'll be fine.

Seriously though, as the Trumpers dig in their heels in denial, I'm more and more convinced we needs some seriously nasty medicine before this can get better. We need to burn out the festering infestation that is the bonkers GOP before we can get something sane again. The democrats have softened and prevented some of the worst inasanity of the GOP/tea party (to Dems detriment!). We need to unleash the full insanity of the "party of the 0.1%"/Libertarian crazyland so their base can feel the pain. Maybe then they'll change their mind.

Lying Ted even said he wanted to cut "socialized medicine" (code for Medicaid/Medicare) to fix the deficit (pay for tax cuts for his oligarch masters).

You know what? I'm fine with the GOP taking away social security, *AS LONG AS I GET BACK ALL THE MONEY PLUS INTEREST THAT I PUT INTO IT ALREADY*

Wait, what's that? I won't get a dime back? Then go fuck yourself, GOP.

No, he specifically said that Republicans will not address the deficit while they have unified control.

Which translates into "we need Democrats here to blame them for when we cut it...".
