Any SS cuts will affect future recipients only. McConnell will pitch it to the Boomers as "screw your kids or screw yourselves" and we know how the Boomers treat anyone who isn't a Boomer.

Anyway, the only "problem" with the SS program is income concentration at the top is hollowing out the SS taxbase. Simply tax the income of the wealthy like we tax the working stiffs and the "SS problem" is solved, forever.

They'd love to, but this is provided the Republicans still have control of both sides of Congress after November. If they don't, social security is safe until at least 2020.

I doubt they will touch it. The current crop of Republicans in DC don't care about deficits.

You have it backwards. Republicans will not touch SS unless they can do it under the cover of being able to blame Democrats. So, it is in the case of the Democrats winning the House and Republicans holding the Senate that we have to worry about SS being gutted. They will just add a cut to SS to every 'must pass' bill that comes around and blame the Democrats for each shutdown or failed bill to correct whatever major issue is pressing at the time until Democrats let it pass or get voted out because Republicans keep screaming about how ineffective they are. Then when in solid control of all levers the Republicans will go back to saying the debt is not a problem, no need to do anything, in fact we can probably handle another big tax cut to corporations and the ultra wealthy.

No, he specifically said that Republicans will not address the deficit while they have unified control.

They'll blame the Democrats and their base will eat it up.

Those people somehow rationalized themselves into believing whatever comes out of Trump's two-sided mouth and forked tongue is the gospel truth so I'd assume same goes for any Repub Congress Creeper up on the hill.

They also still believe in St. Reagan's tricky trickle down theory of economics so it's not like this is some kind of recent phenomenon. Trump and his cronies in Congress just made the Big Lie more flavorful and aromatically appealing by injecting a much higher level of fear and hate into their rhetoric.

edit - As far as the Repubs touching the third rail methinks they're already into it by giving the wealthy a nice fat tax cut they didn't need as part of an overall plan to somehow justify why essential services and entitlements need to be cut back or totally eliminated.

Don't forget spicing it with the salt of liberal tears. The 'Us vs. Them' aspect has been very important in the Republican message. They have worked hard at making politics into a sport where it doesn't matter how the game is played as long as your team wins.

It would be a death sentence for the GOP if they did that as id imagine most of their base lives off SS. I think its a death sentence for any party that touches it.

Edit: I forgot to put in the GOP Voter Retardation Bonus into my calculation. With that inputted...yeah they will eat it up and beg for more.

Yes they will cut Social Security benefits but not in the way you think. Look for them to change the inflation calculation first and foremost, just like they did with their tax cut bill that's actually a stealth tax increase on the poor and middle class.

You mean do Republicans want to fuck everyone without consent?

Yeah, I'm quite certain they do.

So true. It's what happens when their politicians need to divert and juke their way around the fact that they've been exploiting their own working class constituency for the betterment of the very wealthy's portfolios for nigh on decades now.

These thoroughly corrupted politico's of theirs are forced to keep driving home this "Us vs. Them" dodge because as far as their working class folks are concerned they've been thoroughly played into accepting the idea that their lives are somehow better off financially because their lives would be much worse if the despised Democrats had anything to do with it. It's that old "give them a shiny object to fixate on while we rob them blind" ploy that their constituency keeps falling for time after time.

Those shiny objects I referred to? Well there's hate the immigrants object and hate the gays, fear the non-whites, despise the gun grabbers, hate the baby killers and hate the anti-Christ heathen who would burn every Christian church to the ground shiny objects just for starters. You know, all of those single issue things that distract away from the fact that their Repub blue collar constituency's wallets are being emptied into the very wealthy's pockets and their pensions and entitlements are in imminent danger of being hacked to pieces and converted into more corporate welfare and tax free monies for the wealthy.

McConnell and the Reps have discovered that "alternative facts" works. They may do as they please and believe that gaslighting is the answer. It might work unless we vote them out.

I hope they do cut it. You won't see another Republican elected in Florida for 20+ years.
You'd be pretty naive to think they wouldn't mitigate any impacts of the cuts for people 55 or older (their base) and ensure that young punk liberals bear all the costs (“oh I'm sorry you're supposed to rely on your 401k not SS!”.)

From the turtle himself......

Tax Cut
Republicans in December 2017 also passed a tax cut projected to add more than $1 trillion to the debt over a decade after leaders gave up on creating a plan that wouldn’t increase the debt under the Senate’s scoring rules.

At the time, McConnell told reporters, “I not only don’t think it will increase the deficit, I think it will be beyond revenue-neutral.” He added, “In other words, I think it will produce more than enough to fill that gap.”
