I wanted to start to get into linux, but every noob verision i find (mandrake, red hat, and Lycoris) doesnt support my 9500 pro. Why havent they done anything about it? Are there any other noob version out there that support the 9500 pro? Its a shame, I really wanted to give linux a try.

I'm fairly certain the 9500 is supported by the FireGL drivers available here.

There are no distributions which include these. You'll have to install them yourself.

Here's a big ol' <3 for portage...

huh?
www.gentoo.org

Their package management system is called "portage"
All I need to type to install something is usually "emerge ___packagenamehere___" and it handles dependencies and compiling for me - uninstallinging is pretty much as simple as emerge -C ___packagenamehere___

It's not quite a noob distro, but the documentation is wonderful and so are the forums. If you really want to learn a linux system - instead of just hoping it does everything for you - I would recommend it.

Yes, Gentoo pwns.

We had the modified ati-drivers which work with the 2.6 kernel before anyone else. :p

For instructions on installing them manually, Rage3D is an excellent resource.

debian: apt-get install packagename
.... possibly answer some config questions
.... done
gentoo: emerge packagename
.... possibly do some config
.... wait for it to compile
.... keep waiting
.... done

Not that I'm at all interested in anything you have to say guy, but when I make a comment like that it's tongue-in-cheek. Perhaps you are aware of the term?

I find it rather amusing when I receive a reaction such as yours. Quite predictable. :) You only make yourself appear foolish by responding in such a manner.

I have been running Debian on other systems for quite some time and I like it. However, I was glad to be running Gentoo on my main system as, like I say, the modified ati-driver modules which compile against the 2.6 kernel were released by some gentoo developers.

Perhaps you'd like to refrain from posting in threads unless you have something helpful to contribute?

That would be nice (although I don't hold out much hope). Thanks. ;)

Skiguy411, if you need any more help with this simply post here. Pretty much any problem you may come across will have been covered over at Rage3D though most likely.

For anyone this applies to, there's some interesting information on the ati-drivers here.

Some of it is Gentoo specific, but there are general sections dealing with enabling FSAA, using hidden (sometimes performance improving) driver options & other miscellaneous troubleshooting info.
