Will Linux boot from USB 2.0 external hard drive?

I have bootable USB enclosure with 40Gb HD, BIOS supposrts booting from USB and detects the drive, but how do I install it on this drive so it can boot from it? Is there something in installation procedure for this? Thank you!
 
probably, if your bios supports it...

That's interesting idea though. I think there are a few mini-distros that are designed specificly for taking over boxes if you have physical access to them. You know, like if you forgot root password or something, of have a naughty Windows box...
 
Thank you! Sucks, I'll give it a shot anyway. I had WinXP starting to boot from USB 2.0, but it would bomb out after loading most of the drivers.

... and then you'd need usb host controller drivers as well as drivers for the individual devices you need to get to the root partition compiled into the kernel.
