I know they will EVENTUALLY...but how close is this to reality? Is there another generation of LCD's on the horizon that will take out CRT's altogether?

If that's what you're waiting for... dunno... but by the time that happens... there will probably be something newer than LCDs... and then you'll end up waiting for that "new" thing to equal LCDs... 
My guess is that OLEDs will replace LCDs. They switch faster (Eliminating ghosting), consume less power, are brighter, and show color better. This would make current flatscreen monitors that much more attractive, especially when the prices eventually equalize themselves with CRT prices.
I have been reading alot of reviews on the best LCD's out today and the people still say they aren't as good for gaming as CRT's. If they were relatively close in price as CRT's then this wouldn't be as big of an issue. But for twice the price I would want the thing to be better at everything, not just some things. That's just me though
I believe that there is a 17" Mitsu out that has a response time of <15ms. I believe that there should be no ghosting with this. If they could get this to work in bigger models than LCDs will definently be better than CRTs in every aspect.

In terms of ghosting there are three monitors that have 16 ms or less response time (this equals almost no visible ghosting) that are or will be available shorty.
1. Planar PX171M priced at $589. Availability: 1 or 2 months I believe. [source]
2. Hitachi CML174 priced at $630.00. Availability: Now. [MonitorsDirect.com]
3. Benq FP767 priced at ??? (around $600 would be my guess). Availability: Unknown. [source]
New technologies, like FFD, will lower response times further. The next big hurtle for LCDs will be displaying correct colors and that's something I know absolutely nothing about.

Ghosting isn't the only problem... multiple resolutions is another... and as previously mentioned... the way the colors are displayed.
I've never heard of the color problem. What do you mean? Like yellows are posted as red and green is purple and such? WTF?

It will give you a little more background on the"+'s and -'s" of LCD vs. CRT... Some colors (reds) are difficult to reproduce accurately and sometimes 'bleed' into other colors....

lol... actually it's more so the gradiation of colors... personally i don't have a problem with mine... and it's an older model Sony... which was definitely not one of the best ones compared to the other models. some people say white doesn't look white... but has a pale yellowish color... some say black isnt dark enough... and so on... and as far as ghosting is concerned on mine... i don't play that many FPS games... but more simulations... and to tell you the truth... the slight ghosting looks freakin cool.... :Q... ...
...The switching times listed on current LCDs are for the best case scenario. That is, switching from black to white, then white to black. Other switches of color and grayscale are much longer. FFD technology will improve in those areas drastically. This will help LCDs compete with CRTs in terms of useability and will probably be on the market within a few months.

That's tight!I am a proud owner of a Samsung 191T. I have NO problems with UT2003, which is one of the main games I play. BF1942 isn't a big deal either. CS is the only game that I notice heavy ghosting in. However, this is something that I've gotten use to and I can now play just as good or better on my LCD than I can on a CRT. Everyone has their own opinions on whether or not ghosting is visible or a problem, but I can honestly say I have no problems with my 191T. If your game of choice supports 1280x1024, or whatever native resolution of your LCD, the game looks EXTREMELY nice!

the sgi panel has a response rating of 40ms if i remember correctly which isnt that hot...
however....
even my roomate's 171fp analog lcd at 25 ms response time has served him will in 3d shooters, even at non native resolutions........
i'm going to get one this winter inf act!

Yea, but at the time that review was released, the GF3 was the big dog. ATI was only offering it's original Radeon at the time.

Yell, since SGI stopped making it, the only place you're gonna be able to find it will be on ebay. You're gonna have to have the multilink adapter (to use it with a DVI or Analog connection), since the monitor uses a proprietary SGI format. They usually go for between $800 - $900 (together).
Okay I went to best buy today and bought a 191T Samsung, hooked up to my GF3 ti200 analoge looks pretty decent. My friend likes CRT's better but I think the samsung looks alot better than any CRT I've seen. What is that thing XP has built in that gives you crisper text and stuff? Anyways, I'm not sure how much of a diff DVI will make but even if it will make alot I still will stick with CRT's for now. Ghosting is not a problem with this monitor but the fact that I can only go 12x10 is a real bummer. If this thing could go higher resolutions I'd keep it. But I'm going to take it back and wait till LCD's come out that support higher resolutions and come down in price...
what is that text enricher/crisp thing in XP i keep hearing about that makes LCD's better for text. Anyone know? I did a search on it but got too many lcd' results...
