Will KT333 (Asus A7V333 to be exact) support Barton?

I'm planning an upgrade, and here's what I was thinking of getting.

Asus A7V333 w/RAID
Samsung 512 (256x2) DDR 2700
Athlon XP 1800 (1.53 Ghz) Retail
Gainward GeForce 4 4200 128 MB
Addtronics ET6896A Case
Antec 400 watt PWS

But then I started thinking, Barton will be coming out soon and that should give me quite a bit of a boost, but I don't have enough money to upgrade to a new processor again in a few months (plus that's kind of a waste in any case). So I was thinking, what if I got everything except the processor and then got a Barton when it comes out? I'll have a good speed boost, and I'll be able to get a much better processor when it comes out. Is this possible? And even if it is, do you guys think Barton is really worth waiting for, or should I just go for everything now? Thanks for the advise.

Its hard to say, not alot of info availble yet on Barton.

I'd just go ahead and get what you was going to. No sense in waiting several months for it to be released.

The Barton and Opteron are going to have different pin counts than the current Athlon XPs, so it physically would not fit into any KT333 board.

It is hard for me to suggest you upgrading or not, as you have not included your current computer specs. If you can run the programs you will be using decently, for the next couple months, I would hold off until the release of the Barton or Opteron.

Barton will use the same socket as Tbred, Palomino etc. AMD has clearly stated this. Opteron is a different beast however since it's AMD's 8th gen processor. Anyway back to Barton. Even though it uses the same socket it doesn't guarantee compatibility with older motherboards. There are issues such as voltage and amps. Barton will have more cache and higher clockspeeds which means it will draw more current from the motherboard.

Despite this, I would give good odds that Barton will work on the latest KT333 boards. But we probably won't know for sure for a while yet. Tbred compatibility hasn't been 100% determined yet (especially with older KT133A boards and such).

it should work on the newest boards with just a bios update for most part. There is no difference in pin count.

If you are OK with what you have now then I say wait until Barton comes out and get all the components then... if you want to upgrade now then what you have is a nice choice.. But remember in months from now when what you are waiting for comes out- something newer and faster and better will be on it's tails- that's how this game works😉

Upgrade when you are darn good and ready, something new is always about to come out.
If you get it and it won't support Barton, then fine.....wait for the new Opteron to come down to the desktop level. Nothing is going to support 64-bit with great stability for a while. Programmers will have to get used to it.

Barton isn't due until Q4, according to AMDs roadmap. It's pin-compatible with the palomino and thoroughbred since it is likely to be identical to the thoroughbred only with double the cache. Opteron (sledgehammer) will never be available in desktop systems, it's only designed for the 2+ way server systems. The chip codenamed Hammer (likely to be called Athlon 64 or somesuch) will be available in desktop machines although it will not be pin compatible with opteron or the current/future athlons.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I think I'll just go with what I'm thinking of getting now, because ripthesystem is right, something new is always around the corner. Thanks again.
