Will keeping VHS tapes near my LCD monitor or speaker damage them?

Ok so here's my setup. I have a load of old VHS tapes that I keep stacked on my desk behind my LCD monitor which is a 2005FPW. There is about 12-14 inches of space between the back of the monitor and the tapes. There is also the front left speaker from my klipsch 5.1 promedia set about 6 inches away from another pile of tapes. My dad keeps telling me to move them away, because the magnetic field will destroy and damage the tapes over time. We got into a big arguement over it and I would like some peoples opinions? If there is any more info you need on the setup just ask. Thanks.

Also if you guys could post little explanations as to why...I want to show him this...because it was a pretty serious arguement and he made like the biggest deal out of this.

no. :)

edit: if he is worried about the magnetic field from the speakers/lcd then shouldnt crt tvs emit a magnetic field also?...I have placed many of my VHS tapes on top of my TV's for months at times and they seem to work fine...is that good enough?

What's VHS, precious?

But seriously, your speakers could damage them, they're magnetic media of course, but your speaker magnet is probably pretty weak, and is probably shielded considering they're computer speakers.

Computer speakers are shielded, meaning they do not emit magnetic waves. LCD's don't use magnets

Edited for oversight

common sense

Umm a speaker is a big magnet so common sense would dictate that it can and should damage them.

lcd monitors aren't magnetic and the speaker magnets are probably shielded and not strong enough to ruin vhs tapes regardless. i had a 5.1 system subwoofer like 5 inches from a CRT for a few years and the CRT was never affected.

CRT's certainly use electromagnets.

Thanks for the replies guys...I used to place my center speaker on my CRT all the time but then I read in the mannual that it was indeed shielded and won't have any effect on my monitor. My dad is old school CCCP styles from Poland in the 60's...maybe the electronic devices they had there emitted huge magnetic fields, but times have changed. I tried to tell him that but he just would not hear it, ill show him this thread and maybe he will see some light, I won't be suprised if he comes on here arguing lol.

my bad, I was thinking permanent only, nevertheless OP does not have a CRT

Also I have another question though...if this guy thinks an LCD might damage a VHS (which it obviously can't from the posts here), then the same can apply for the tape just being in the DVD/VHS player and having a 100 kg 34 inch widescreen sony CRT right above it?

see my post

in most cases, unless the speaker has no cover on it, and the tape is closer than it is... I would say that, unless he's using decent sized subwoofers for speakers on his desk, that it will do no harm.....

Most speaker magnets I've seen are anything but weak. That said, they tend to be shielded, so they don't cause trouble no matter how strong they are.

yes although the metal of a VCR would act as a shield...Plus the magnetic field of a CRT would be fairly small

Yes, unless the VCR was magnetically shielded, which it is not ;)
