Will keeping a laptop plugged in and run from home ruin the battery quickly and hurt the computer?

My laptop is always plugged in with the battery left in... I never have a problem, and still continue to get a good 5 hours of life out of it... 🙂

HP NC6000.

My laptop is five years old.. I bought it used three years ago.. Since I've had it, I've had it plugged in and on 24/7 most of the time. Sometimes I leave it off for a few days.. I leave the battery in always because if power goes out, my laptop can stay on. The battery still gives a 4+ hour charge.

A laptop is just like any other computer. If it can't run 24/7, it's a crappy laptop.

Heat will destroy a battery life.

I have a lappy that got 5+ hours original endurance (under working conditions) for the first 12 months.

After that it lost about 1/2 hr per month.

At presnt I have betwen 30-45 minutes on the battery charge. Time for a new battery. This time though I will use a laptop cooler to help reduce the heat damage.

I believe either NiMH or NiCad batteries (or both, don't remember exactly) weren't supposed to be left charged for long periods of time. Part of recommended maintenance was a battery "exerciser" that totally discharged and recharged the battery during a long period of low usage.

You can get away with a lot using lithium ion batteries though, so I wouldn't worry about it if that's what you have.

any decent laptop stops charging the batteries when it they reach 100%. mine charges one at a time and stops charging a battery when it is full. if i turn off the computer, unplug it, and plug it back in, it will start charging again for about 30 seconds per battery and then stop.

anyway, i've had my lappy a little over 1.5 years, and it runs nearly all the time, and nearly all the time on AC, and the batteries hold the same charge as when it was new - 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes with both batteries (it's a huge P4 bruiser with all the speed options and sucks power like there's no tomorrow).
