Will Ivy Bridge delay push Haswell launch forward?

Hi,

As you probably are aware of the launch of the Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs has been delayed again. Expected launch now is mid/late Q2 to Q3 2012 depending on CPU model.

Now the question if this will also push forward the launch of the Intel Haswell CPUs? Last I heard they should be released in Q1 2013. If that is the case, then there will only be a 6-9 month sales window for Ivy Bridge. In that case I'll probably skip Ivy Bridge and wait for Haswell.

So what do you think? Will Haswell be delayed as well? And what excuse do you think will Intel come up with this time?

Sounds like you have an agenda. Sure, Intel will push the release to annoy their customers on purpose, and tells many, many lies about the true reason.

Other than our uneducated expectations and opinion, how can any of us proclaim Haswell to be delayed regardless when it is released?

Only Intel knows when it plans to release Haswell, for all we know they have planned to release Haswell in Q3 2013 from the beginning?

Since its supposedly a process problem it might also cause a slip of Haswell which will be on the same process.

Almost certainly. They are stretching Moore's law a little because of the lack of competition and to allow better economics.

Doubtful.

The reason, as other people in this forum have already mentioned, is that Intel needs to give its partners time to sell each generation. And since SB lost a few months due to the SATA bug, it had to extend its life into Q1 2012. IB release date was pushed back to Q2 2012, and we have known about that for quite awhile now. It is safe to assume that the new release schedule for Intel will be Q2 from now on (give a year in between each generation). No one expects Haswell until Q2 2013 at the earliest.

I think Haswell will be delayed in the same fashion to make their sales quota.

How can a product be delayed when a release date was never given to begin with? The only date Intel gave about Haswell was 2013, and I am fairly confident it will be released that year. :)

*Edit*

Also, Intel did say 1 year after IB (sometime in 2013). Having said that, Haswell appears to be on schedule for Q2 2013 (assuming IB launches in Q2 2012).

Let me say I haven't seen anything official on this release of processors after our 3rd generation Intel® Core™ but as a general rule in the past we have give our desktop boards a one year cycle and server boards a two year cycle before we release a new chipset/board.

April 30 is mid/late Q2? That is the revised (speculative) launch date of the desktop i5/i7 quads, out from April 9 which is a change of 3 weeks.

I know nothing about this stuff, but if Intel is constantly pushing ahead with new technology/process, while they will have targets - won't they release as they are ready ?

Meaning 22nm is ready and we are now able to/have produce(d) enough to put a product out = put it out, and then likewise with the next node ? I always assumed while they have a timeline they are aiming for, that they will release as they are ready/able to and the time it takes for research/development/production creates the buffer between new CPU releases on the next node down.

I guess there could be reasons to sit on a huge stock of 22nm inventory and keep selling 32nm chips that I'm not aware of, but once it's working well enough to put a product on the shelves, isn't the new process more profitable ? Or a better avenue to recoup r&d costs ?

Intel will have to release Haswell EARLY to compete with Piledriver.

(lol)

Because they have told us they will release CPUs based on a 1-year cadence?

Ticktock = 1 yr cadence is a statement of intent, not a 'promise' or a contract, and certainly not a set-in-stone release date for any and every chip they make in the future.

Really this isn't even low hanging fruit, it's fruit that fell off the tree weeks ago and has long since rotted.

Has there actually been another delay or is this the original april 9 -> 29 delay that has been known for a while?

This. It's not a law, but something most companies follow pretty strictly for product releases. I guess the timing might turn from typical 12 months to 11 months, but not much more than that.

Well, I'm not sure what you are trying to say, but as of now, the release is April 8 for motherboards and 29th for chips.

In what way does a statement of intent differ from a release date? really? They are the same thing, release dates get pushed and readjusted all the time, for all intents and purpose they are the same thing.

You can't call it a delay cause the date hasn't been promised yet. ;)

But by their 1 year per product schedule, Haswell arriving in same month as Ivy Bridge just a year later wouldn't be a delay.

This is just cheating.............Based on the 1 year schedule, as SnB is released in 2011 Q1, IVY is set to 2012 Q1 while Haswell shall be released in 2013 Q1

Not at all. If you look at delays with historical CPU releases from both AMD and Intel, the entire timeline shifts when a delay happens. Like for example with Bulldozer. Bulldozer came Q3 2011. Piledriver is coming Q3 2012. Llano is Q2 2011, Trinity is Q2 2012.

That's also because development of a successor is somewhat dependent on the development of the current chip.

April 30 is mid/late Q2?

In my original post I wrote "Expected launch now is mid/late Q2 to Q3 2012 depending on CPU model.". Only the some models will be released on 30 April. Some will be later.

And Yes, April 30 is around mid Q2.

It's the latest known delay to date.

While following the information from Intel in media regarding when Ivy Bridge was going to be released, the expected launch has been changed from:

Q4 2011->Early January (CES 2012)->Q1 2012->April 8 2012->And now mid/late Q2 to Q3 2012 depending on CPU model.

The first isn't a change, as it was merely a confusion between "shipping" and being able to buy in stores, aka official release date. It's just as bad as the "next gen iPad coming in 6 months"(when the new iPad just released) rumors.

As for Haswell, they have a rather vague "March-June" stamped. I guess its possible we might see desktop models in March, with most chips being released over the coming months.

I think at this point its good to tone down expectations for both Ivy Bridge and Haswell.
