Will it work??

Hi all, i was wondering if you have any suggestions comments or anything about this board i plan to build. I've been learning how to build a computer for a little over half a year now, don't think i got it down right yet...

Motherboard: DFI Lanparty Ultra-D ( i would pick epox but can't find a store in Canada that sells it. If anyone knows where i can get an epox 9npa+ultra somewhere in the toronto area, please tell me, a website would also be appreciated.)

CPU: AMD64 3000+ 939 Venice
Graphics card: 6600GT PCI-E (Leadtek Winfast)
Ram: Corsair 1gb (512x2) value select i think 184-pin DIMM

These are the basics. For everything else, it's not really as important. Just to make sure though, for hard drive, i have to make sure that it is S-ATA right? (not IDE? does this make sense?) and any kind of CD-RW/DVD-ROM will go in to the motherboard right? there's no specific compatibility with the mobo right?

Hi David,

Welcome to this world.

1. You can use a pata or sata (serial-ata) hard drive. Not much difference between either. Sata is a newer technology with smaller cables. In theory Sata drives are faster. In reality, it doesnt matter because the extra speed of a sata drive cannot be used. (Think of it as an automobile that can run at 150mph but the spedometer is locked at 100) Pata works just fine.
2. Any cdrw drive will work. Might I suggest the NEC 3540 dvdrw drive. Only $10-15 more than a cdrw drive and is terrific.

thanks Leigh, but will the CPU, Graphics card, and Ram i chose be compatible with the motherboard i chose? and is there an alternative to take instead of what i have chosen to make this computer better without much more of the cost? (i think the graphics card is pretty good, don't think i would want to spend more on a 6800.

The only thing I would consider changing is the RAM. I'd consider getting 2 GB. New games are starting to utilize more than 1 GB, and future games won't be getting any smaller. The 6600GT will be able to handles games at moderate detail settings for a while longer... but when games really start to need more than 1 GB of RAM, performance will drop dramatically when the game starts using the swap file. I guess it really depends on how long you plan to use the computer and how concerned you are with games. If you plan on keeping it more than a year, I'd go with 2 GB right now. Otherwise, what you have listed looks fine.

is a 300 watt power supply enough to power this computer???

If it's a quality one, then probably. If it's a cheap one that isn't really even capable of a constant 300 watts, probably not.

Yep that's a nice machine you have planned there, it looks as though it's on the budget side, but very nice components picked out for it. I would suggest a nice Fortron 300w power supply, you can pick one up for very cheap!!! I would also suggest instead of the 6600GT go with an ATI x800GTO2, might be a bit more money but WELL worth it!!

I say do what i did. I was close to getting a simliar set up like your self but saved up like $400 more dollars and was able to get an eopx 9npa nf4 mobo, a 7800gt, and a 3500 proc.

if you need it now, tha that system is fine. grab a dvd burner like the nec mentioned above or the benq1640. there only like $10 more and well worth it. if you can at least get an x800gto2, it can be overclocked to performance levels of a $400 card for costing like $200
