Will it ever be possible to create "self-aware" software?

Will technology or programming ever be advanced enough to create software that is self-aware? It's a popular thought in scifi movies and books, so I'm sure lots of people think about the possibility.

We have self-aware software, it's just been programmed by billions of years of nature's R&D program,* and is run on squishy hardware. I'll say within 100 years we'll have some sort of self-aware machine.
