Will Intel be changing their socket or bus speed anytime soon?

I'm going to be building a new PC and I'd hate to find out Intel is going to stop using the socket 478 anytime soon.

They're going to change right after you build your computer no matter how long you wait, so you might as well build one now.

Yea, Intel likes to change platforms every year in order to extract the most amount of money
from its customers......
Your going to get screwed no matter what you do so my might as well just go ahead a buy it.....

3-3.5 GHz chips will most likely be realized on a 478 pin platform. If we are lucky, maybe even up to 4 GHz (theoretical max for P4). As the 3 Ghz chips come out though, intel will likely start phasing in their new chipsets (early next year), which will support a more numerous pin configuration and perhaps the then 'classic' 478.

New stuff is gonna be mainstream by summer next year, so you kind of have to bite the bullet now, unless you want to wait and pay top dollar when they arrive. I splurged now, figuring that by this time next year, the new stuff will be as cheap as last years new stuff is now.

as i see it too, memory is playing catch up to cpu. if you can get a DDR400 system to feed a P4, you'll be pretty zippy in the time to come.

didn't realize, you had RDRAM going... Why the rush to build a system? You got the goods to take you into the next generation!

Well guys, since Prescott will also be S478 according to Intel's site, I'd say Intel is being very good about things if this holds true............I actually will be very suprised though if this doesn't change considering Prescott will be on .09 proccess...................;)

gururu, I know I can just replace my CPU with a 2.4 GHz Northwood (400 MHz FSB) if I want. I'm pretty sure this is as far as I can upgrade this Dell. However, I was thinking rather then put $350 into this Dell, I'd take the money and use it towards a new home built PC. I'm really not sure which route to take. If I build my own then I can most likely take it up to and maybe beyond 3 GHz. Do you think it's worth it to throw more money into this Dell? Thanks for the replies guys!

BTW, my PC has to be able to run Unreal Tournament 2003 at the highest settings and I'm not sure if I can do that with my current setup.

Bus speed yes (667fsb with Prescott sometime next year) socket no. If Intel decides to give upgraders a break and produce a 533fsb Prescott, then that CPU should run in all of the current crop of 850e/845e/645dx/648 and co boards.
