Hi

i'm looking for some quick advice before i buy a new laptop tomorrow. I want something that will perform acceptably with linux-beryl and windows-aero. Will the integrated graphics be enough, or should i get something with a dedicated graphics card?

the computer has 2 GB of RAM, and core 2 duo @ 1.66 ghz.

keep in mind i'm on a tight budget and this computer fits the bill. I will not be gaming, but i will be photo editing / website designing, and using beryl / aero.

thank you for any help.

If you are juse using it for something simple like Aero, then GMA950 is fine, but if you want to play games, it will not be pretty... I believe you can get around 10 frames per second in Doom3 or something like that... Pretty much any game within the last 4 years (with the exception of UT2K3) would be unplayable.

hi
thanks for your response.
yes yes, this will not be a "play" laptop (i'll build a desltop with student loan money for that :)). I just want it to run smooth in vista, and smooth in compiz or beryl. i have heard that intel has good driver support in the linux world, so i'm hoping this new laptop will fare better than my old one with an ATI card (the drivers never did work right in linux).

the 950 seems to run xgl ok , at least i've seen that at work.

if you can wait, you might want to wait for the sonoma based laptops, or buy one with an ati chipset.

15'' laptop
2 GB Ram
intel core 2 duo @ 1.66 Ghz
160 GB 5400 rPm hard drive
(some promo printer, that i don't want included)
$1200 CAD.

The next model up has an Nvidia 7600 i think, but it is $1600 or 1700. i don't think i can afford that much.

I don't know what the exchange rate is, but a year ago, Dell was selling laptops with similar specs, but with an X1400 for $1200.

Look for a notebook with ATI X1150/1400, or Geforce 6100, even though they're still integrated, they are a LOT better than the GMA950, all of Intel's video chipsets so far have been horrible. I've seen some nice notebooks with ATI video for under $1k US.
