i have a celeron 566 at 900 mhz at 1.87 volts with a GORB and arctic silver. CPU temps are 39 on full load (RC5 crunching) and 26 on idle. case temp is 26C.

if i get an ALPHA PEP66 with the delta fan, how much dec in CPU temp should i see? i want tmake sure it is worth it to spend 40 dollars and lose a RAM slot.

thanks for the replies.

from what I know, you should see a fair difference. probably 5-10 degrees, depending on setup.

just wait, someone will flame me soon....
I wouldnt get the delta fan, just cuz its WAY TOO FRIGGIN LOUD.

5C isn't too much. That's about the difference I get between a Gorb and a PAL6035. The gorbs are good low cost coolers, but aren't nearly as good as alpha's.

You're all missing the point. I'm going to say no. If at idle the temp is the same as the case temp, you can't get much better than that(in fact it's imposible with air cooling). Plus 39C at full load is really quite low for such an overclock.

You should really at this point just congratulate yourself on an excellent overclock. Your temps are really low.

Plus I think it would actually be wrong to go with the alpha seeing as you have such good results already. Why would you want to spend an extra $40 when your temps are about the best I've seen(not counting those new boards that give out false readings)? Plus you'll lose a ram slot.

Basically it doesn't make sense to overclock a Celeron and then turn around and spend a fortune on cooling. At this point you could have bought a faster processor(with no cooling worries).

My .02 don't do it.

Might also want to take into account that the lower the temp`s the longer the life of the componet... An Alpha is the best hands down but if price is a concern (certainly no fortune) go with a cheaper cooler but as always "You get what you pay for"

Just a note around the time Gorbs came out I was modifying GlobalWin FDP32`s to fit on Slocket adapters and having excellent results and cheaper too (bought several for $15 shipped) BTW I never broke a lug off an adapter with a clip on heatsink too, Gorbs have their place just not in my boxes...

my .02 worth of gasoline.... ;)

I agree with MADCAP. Spending $30 - $40 on $90 - $100 CPU is not very smart. Alpha is pretty nice, but for the money I am pretty impressed with Golden Orb.

I would recommend Golden Orb for the price/performance balance for Celeron.

Prolonging a life of CPU is not too much of an issue. I have 4 1/2 years old Pentium 166Mhz which I overclocked quite a lot in the past, and it still runs fine. The thing is that I do not have any need for it anymore. Your CPU will become obsolete before it dies most of the time.

Given your temps, I'd say stick with your GORB. 39C is EXTREMELY cool for full load. Even if the temps aren't very accurate, give and take 5C, 44C is still relatively cool for full load.

I pick up about 4C going from GORB to Alpha PEP66. However, I was up in the mid to high 40's. I have to agree that running 39C with full load, you might see less 'improvement' with an Alpha. Unless you are just interested for the experiment, it doesn't look worth the dollars. Lark
