Will I see an increase in performance with new GPU?

Hi All,

Just ordered a gaming laptop which comes with a GeForce GTX 765M and Intel Core i7 4700HQ.

Will I see tangible differences between over the 5850 I've been using?

Thanks.

I am not sure. But I guess a laptop with that spec won't be faster, perhaps even slower. Not sure though.

The GTX 765M is a slightly downclocked version of the desktop 650 Ti:

765M: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-765m/specifications
650Ti: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-650ti/specifications

The 650 Ti is about 10-15% slower than a desktop HD 5850, and the 765M is probably about another 10-15% slower based on its much slower VRAM clock.

The CPU in your new laptop is the equivalent of your overclocked i7 860.

So overall, you'll see lower performance, but it will be somewhat comparable - all games playable on your current system will still be playable at slightly lower settings.

Going off what Termie said about the 765M being a slightly downclocked 650 Ti, here's a benchmark comparison of the 650 Ti and the 5850:

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/512?vs=680

And a more up to date benchmark suite that compares the 650 Ti to the 5870 (the 5850 isn't included for these benchmarks):

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1062?vs=1129

It's going to depend on the game. The 5850 will be better in some games because of memory bandwidth and higher raw power, while the 765M will be better in others because of its more efficient architecture. The 650 Ti even beat the 5870 in Metro: Last Light. But the general idea is you're not going to see an overall change for better or worse between the 5850 and the 765M; it's going to be more of a sidegrade than an upgrade or downgrade.

Cheers guys.

I've had to down size from a full tower to a laptop so just wanted a gauge of where I would be at.
