Hi everyone. I have the Canon PIXMA iP6000D printer. I use it primarily for printing photos taken with my digital camera and I am EXTREMELY happy with the results.The iP6000D has a max print resolution of 4800 X 1200 and uses 6 different color inks.

Now for my question--the Canon PIXMA iP5000 has a resolution of 9600 X 2400 or in other words TWICE the resolution of my printer but uses 5 different ink colors and no card reader. So my printer has one additional color, a card reader which I could care less about ( never use it ) and half the resolution. Should I buy the iP5000 for double the resolution? Has anybody compared the two? Would I see a difference? Is the difference noticeable by the naked eye after a certain resolution? Thanks!

Am I not thinking of something right or wouldn't that be 8 times the resolution?
 
Actually the 5000 only uses 4 colors when printing photos/graphics. The extra tank is pigmented black for text only. It approximates 6-color printing like yours because the dots it can put down are so small. However, if you do a LOT of text printing as well as photos and other graphics, then the 5k might be worth looking into as the pigmented black does text really well plus there is a lot more ink in the pig. black (BCI-3e BK tank in the 5k) than in the dye based (BCI-6 BK tank in both).

I'm really trying to get feedback as to whether the added resolution will be noticeable compared to my current printer's resolution when printing photos. Anybody?
 
Well, I have the iP3000 (going for $50 or less right now) and I just printed a photo on fuji paper (free after rebate except for tax) that most couldn't tell from a photo taken on traditional film and printed on glossy photo paper. If you already have better than that, how good can it get? You might be able to tell the diff in pictures where there are really fine details - but it would probably take a magnifying glass to see it.

Since the Canon I850 , the Canon 4 color printers have decent (for me, reds and woodgrains less vibrant) photo print. Yours is a 6 color printer, which mostly gives better color. They also have an eight color printers for even more improved color, but that sounds like overkill to me. YMMV

The 5000 has 1/2 the dot size, and last I checked was only released with 5 color (Photo black and text black). This means it will print black text clearer and faster with less ink.


There are some comparison pictures on the site; and show what improvments in color and texture , if any, between printers.

It's not likely something you notice, & yes, the IP600 actually has a better color ink system for photos than the IP5000.
