Will I require extra cooling/fans with my rig? Antex 300 + GTX460 + Core i3-540

Antec 300 case, stock.

The case only has two fans; one on top blowing air out, one at the back blowing air out too (to the top of the case as well).

The CPU cooler is the stock intel too.

I don't plan on overclocking it except maybe for fun occasionally; but I really doubt I'll push it very far. The 540 is capable of going beyond 4Mgz but it's beyond me why I would even need this much power, even with just two cores...

I wouldn't think Intel would sell a craptacular heatsink + fan with its CPU but with only two fans blowing air out, I'm wondering if I can't do better for cheap. Fans aren't expensive and I have emplacements for three more: 2 for the HDD bay and 1 to the side of the GPU.

Noise is also a big concern of mine; if I need more cooling I'm ready to spend a bit more to keep it quiet, or replace my existing fans with better fans.

Assuming you have a PSU with a decent fan, this setup doesn't sound like it would be problematically hot. But sounds like you already bought this stuff, so you might want to stress test it and see if you can live with the temperatures or not.

I doubt there will be any heat issues with that setup.

I would recommend covering the side air intake though (the one over the gpu). That should force air to come from the front of the case bringing two benefits. One, you make use of those front air filters; otherwise, the dust just comes in from the filter-less side intake. Two, more airflow in the front will make sure your HDD stays cool.

Thanks, good idea 🙂 Similarly that means that if I were to stress the system more than I'd thought I'd then get a HDD fan first blowing air in to help the flow out...

cover the side fan vent and add the 2 front fans if you are that worried about it. But honestly with that modest system you are not going to have thermal issues with that case.
