Will I regret installing a 12X DVD ROM drive instead of a 16X DVD Rom?

Hi,

I got a deal on a 12X DVD ROM drive for $14, or a 16X drive for $35 and I'm wondering which to install and which to return. I plan on using the drive to mainly rip DVD's in order to make personal backups on SVCD, or to read CD's for copying to my CDRW drive. Can anyone tell me what would be the speed difference in these two drives? Thanks.

PS The 16X drive is made by BTC, and has the following specs:

Data Transfer rate CAV
DVD-ROM 21,632 kb/S
CD-ROM 7,200 kb/s

Access time: DVD 105 ms
CD 95ms

Buffer 512kb

The 12X drive is made by no name

Data transfer rate: 16,620 kb/s
CD ROM: 6000 kb/s

Data buffer 512kb

I guess my real question is will I notice the difference in performance?

Based on your stated usage, I would have to say that yes, you would notice a difference.

The DVD transfer rate is 30% faster and the CD transfer rate is 20% faster.

What is the CDR speed of your writer? If it is greater than 6000 kb/s, you may want to reconsider the other reader.

Android, go ahead and return the drive, the diffrience between 12xDVD and 16xDVD is marginal. To play DVD movies without a hickup all you would need is 2xDVD. Also, the CD read speed on the 12xDVD woul be at least 32x which is enough for smooth data transfer between your CDRW and DVD.
Make sure to set your both drives to use DMA though...
In short, no you wont notice the diffrience

Thanks for the feedback. What about ripping a DVD, would I see a frustrating difference with the slower drive?
