I was trying to get a fouth machine up and running today, but couldn't get an IP for it (cable connection). Tried everything, switching OS, NIC, Cable, etc. COme to find out, I'm only allowed 3 dynamic IPs on Road Runner. ARGH!!!!!

That must be a policy, or tied to your account type. Rest assured, the system itself has the capability for many more than that.

Jay,

Would Sygate or one of the other proxy programs solve the problem? DSL/Cable router? Freesco, perhaps?

DanC,

They have to be doing something other than just having a policy, it's physically limiting me to 3 ip's only.

Russ,

I've used Cable/DSL Router before. Traded to my father for a 4 port switch cause I was tired of having only one public IP address. I'll use ICS on Win2K probably to bypass this limit. Just have to make up some wires and other things.

Jator,
I recently got the LinkSys DSL/cable router/4-port switch. It's so much better than ICS and Win2KPro. ICs was a bit flaky, one day the network just stopped working, had to reconfigure the whole thing. Then CompUsa ran a $20 off promotion along with a $30 LinkSys rebate, bringing the cost down to $99 🙂 I pulled a Russ (whipped out the CC and bought the sucker) in a moment of weakness. 😉🙂

Now my network is back to stealth mode, and things are working well. One thing neat about it, it allows a tunnel setup to allow 1 PC outside the network for webhosting, ftp, etc.. 🙂

I don't know what you are using for a firewall, but I had to drop the Internet security to medium to get ICS to work with ZoneAlarm (most recent free version). Network ports were closed not stealth in that setup.

Good luck getting that network going! 😀

Well, here's what I did. I took the IP from my wife's machine (Win98), and routed it to my second server so that it had an active connection. I then put in a second NIC in the second server and used ICS to share the connection with my wife's machine. She'll never know the difference. 😉
