So i just bought the xfx 5770 gpu (which is on its way). i have 4 gigs of ddr2 g skill ram, dual core at 2.4ghz with the zalman 9700led cooler, 250gb hdd, 500w psu, rosewill conqueror case, windows 7 ultimate. For gaming on a 19" widescreen monitor will i need to upgrade to a quadcore or six core to get the most out of games, or will i be fine with the dual core? HELP! D:

What dual core? You did not give a make/model of the CPU.

But no you should be ok. Most games are still stuck only using dual core. So 2 fast cores is better, usually, then 4 slower cores.

It may hold you back a little, but may not realyl be worth upgrading. I would try and over clock it first. Raise the FSB a little and also a very small voltage bump. I am sure you can get in the high 2.X Ghz range pretty easy and stable.

Your screens resolution is not super high so you should not tax that system to much if you can get a little more out of the CPU.

The foxcon motherboard i have has no overclocking options in Bios. What would be a good way to overclock without using bios? Upgrading to a new motherboard?

bios is up to date. I don't know what the model of the motherboard is i got it from a friend.

The model should be labeled somewhere on the board.

I'd say that processor is about the slowest I'd pair with a video card like the HD5770. How much it affects performance is going to differ from game to game.

yeah. it annoys me that my processor will hold me back in some games. :\
I think i will save up in the summer for a motherboard and a quad from amd... It's not easy to save up money though being a college student.

If near a Microcenter or Frys keep a eye out. Should be some good deals for AMD Quad CPUs this summer when more 6cores get in retail channels.

Seems like a fairly balanced system. I don't think you have too much to worry about really.

not really true. that low end E2220 is much slower clock for clock than a decent Core 2 duo. his cpu at 2.4 is probably about like mine at 1.8 or so which would certainly limit a 5770 especially at his low res. by how much will depend on the individual game and settings of course. at just 1280 he could easily lose 30-40%, even more in very cpu intensive games, of what a 5770 is capable of. if you doubt me I can put my cpu at 1.8 and run some games at 1280 since my 192sp gtx260 is about equal to a 5770.

I'm not gonna go over this with you again. It always ends up the same, 3+ pages of bickering back and forth and nothing gets accomplished

well then dont say its a fairly balanced system when at 1280 it most certainly is NOT. do you want facts or do you just want to make theoretical statements that prove nothing? again I will even give the benefit of the doubt and put my Core 2 at 2.0 and show just how much is being wasted at 1280. that would at least give a somewhat realistic idea of how much performance he is losing. if he can just oc his cpu a bit then he will have a fairly balanced system though.

EDIT: yeah I guess this will just turn into bickering so I will just lay off unless somebody really wants some comparison benchmarks.

processor will definitely will have to be an upgrade from seeing your guys' conversations. I will just update to a good quadcore LGA 775 since that's the cpu that my motherboard supports atm. Or should i just upgrade both the motherboard and cpu?
