I'm going from a 440BX based mobo to a SiS 655 based mobo. And I want to know will I have to reinstall Windows 98 or will I get away with just puting the new mobo in without reinsatlling Win 98? I know I might have to reinstall the drivers for my videocard, soundcard etc. but like I said will I have to do more?
Thank you for responses.

Most times you can switch without too much trouble. You might want to leave out all the cards except the video, when you first fire it up, to lessen the chances of a conflict.

If the bx board still works, before you shut it down, you could remove some of the system devices, like the ide controller and the chipset drivers. Though 98 is fairly forgiving, most of the time.

I'll put money it that at first it may work *alright* but you will eventually have to format. Backup and format now saving you the headaches.

Another 2 cents...I just upgraded a 98 system today that started out on an old VX chipset, was upgraded to a SIS board with an AMD 350, which today was upgraded to a 2000+ AMD on an all in one SIS chipset motherboard, and it made the switch with no problems.

You won't no!.....but you should... ;).

I believe that you never get the full performence of the upgrade when you change motherboards unless you reformat, the performence loss can be anything from something unnoticeable to almost total system slowdown.

I have had good luck by opening the device manager and deleting out all of the system components just before shutting it down to do the swap- in that case, you won't have potential conflicts. I have seen older systems (Via Apollo) refuse to run even in safe mode when upgraded to fairly new/odd systems (i850 chipset), probably because of some driver conflict.
