Will I get audio from the HDMI port of my video card?

Okay, this will likely seem like a stupid question, but I haven't been building systems for several years and I don't know the answer.

For newer video cards with HDMI output, will I get both video and audio through HDMI or do I still need to get sound from the sound card separately? In my specific situation, I'll be using a ASUS Radeon R9 290 DirectCU II OC, but I'm also interested to know how other cards function in this regard as well.

Both. You'll need to pick the video card's output in your Sounds control panel for Windows to send the audio there vs onboard. It doesn't generally happen automatically.

Yes. Windows also allows you to select the video card's HDMI output as a default audio playback device.
