Heres what I got:

A Power Color Radeon 9700 Non-Pro running @ 1280X1024 x 32Bit color & Samsung SyncMaster 955DF 19" CRT Monitor I bought in August of 02. The monitor's max refresh rate (right off of Samsungs website) for this resolution is 75Mhz. Yet after 3 hours or so of using the PC/Monitor, I get a headache or my eye muscles actually start to twitch (no joke)! Some time ago I went into the ATI Control panel and unchecked 'Hide Modes that this Monitor cannot display' so that now I can run my monitor at 85Mhz Refresh rate for 1280X1024. No headaches since.

I called up Samsung Tech Support and the CSR person was a bit vague on if this would damage my monitor. They said that 'over time' I would start to notice a 'popping noise' coming from the rear housing of the CRT tube, and this would be capacitors blowing out, since the CRT can't officially support the refresh rate. I asked would this happen right away, in a few months or over time? He said, it could happen, "at any time." Not very specific.

The only reason I'm taking this (minor or major??) risk, is that anything BUT the 85Mhz rate gives me a headache. Is this a big deal; am I damaging my hardware as each day goes by?

Suggestions/comments. Thanks

It depends on how hard you push it and this comes from seeing it happen. My friend here not me did this with his monitor and after a while yes he killed it, smoke and everything.

I dont remember how much over he ran it but he did fry the monitor doing this. My monitor has a 85 mhz RR and thats what I keep it at.

I've always wondered this myself, however I cannot find anything online from a reliable source that talks about this. How do we know that the refresh rate is what made your friends monitor go bad?

Unfortunatley no one around here can answer this question it seems.

Do this then go run yours out of spec then let me know how its goes. Dont just do it for a day or week etc etc run it that way from now on then we can test the therory.

ya it'll stop being able to run @ that speed, i have a viewsonic g773, that at 1028 res. would run at 75 hz(mon is a few years old now) so i hard coded it to run @ 85 hz instead, it did this fine for about 2 years, then developed a high picthed whine esspically when the back ground is all white, so now i have to run it at 75hz,
