I just got my first Redhat linux cd and I'm thinking of installing on my hard (win98 already installed).. and i'm reading this very thick book to know how to. (now.. why can't they make a simple and easy distribution that anyone can play with.. like windows.)

Anyways, befire I make a commitment, I would like to know whether I'll be able to see Realplayer/media player movies. (you know.. windows media player)
If I can't, then I'll have to..umm.. throw the CD away.. 🙁
I don' think they don't support Linux.. is there any clients that can?
Or.. I heard about this.. emulation thingy where I can run windows under linux..but I don't want that. I know I can dualboot but.. I want to play them under linux without any slow emulations... 🙁

If ya wanna play Linux try Mandrake 7.2/8.0
....It's still not Windows but pretty damn close
I actually SORTA like it

RealPlayer is available for *NIX.

As for WMP, there are plenty of free mediaplayers available for Linux. Take a look at what comes with Red Hat and the media section of Download.com.

Noatun (KDE's default media player) uses a background layer called xanim. It has the ability to use windows dll's to implement AVI codecs. I've had Indeo and Divx 😉 working for sure. As stated earlier Real actually puts out a Linux native version of Realplayer so that's not a problem. For DVD decoding and MPEG1/2 movies I use a program called Xine (with libcss plugins for playing dvd's). The only format I've hit a problem with is Quicktime, which normally uses a codec called Sorensonvision (sp?). There's currently no native Linux way to play these and Wine doesn't seem to run Quicktime right now (of course wiht OS X out Apple could easily release a Linux native version with very minimal porting effort, but whether or not they will is highly questionable.).
