Will I be able to fit a 42" TV in my Saturn ION 2 Coupe?

Hey guys, I'm planning on buying a TV, 42", and have to transport it. Now my back seats fold down, so do you think I can get the TV in? It looks like it should squeeze in as long as the box it comes in isn't huge, any of you done something similar?

only if u can stand it vertically. if u lay it out flat, the panel is going to deflect inward (or outward) at the center

The box on a 42" TV is huge. Its height is tall enough to barely fit into the back of a Ford Escape.

That's also true. TV dimensions aside, the box adds about a foot to length and width (padding), and probably will double the depth. I just got a 42" LCD (Sharp Aquos) and the box was MUCH bigger than the TV itself.

I was absolutely stunned by how big the friggin' box was. The length of it was probably around 5ft (alright I'm exaggerating here, but it seemed tall ;) more like about 50in) too (I had to rotate it to get it down the stairs and through a doorway).

Here's some sample box dimensions:

http://shopping.msn.com/specs/shp/?itemId=751515926

Width (Shipping) 45.7 in
Depth (Shipping) 16.1 in
Height (Shipping) 34 in

My TV out of the box was almost 41"

From what I gathered LCD can be placed down, plasma cannot. That may or may not be true.

And no, you will not be able to. I had a 40 I tried something similar with and it did not work.

Do they charge a lot for delivery at the big box stores?

do your research, order from amazon. usually free shipping on TVs, no tax.

In answer to your question about LCDs laying down, just don't do it. It can cause the glass in the screen to flex and sometimes break. You know how you touch your LCD computer monitor and you see those pretty colors? That's what you're doing to your expensive high def TV... not a good idea for the monitor, and definitely not a good idea for your TV.

I'm guessing that many problems that people experience with their new TVs are caused by poor shipping practices.

Some will give free delivery on purchases over $XXX. Otherwise, just rent a truck for $20 for the hour or have a friend let you borrow his truck.

The box is gonna be pretty big, so my guess is no. I had to borrow my pops truck to bring my 37inch home. Wouldn't fit in my Ford Contour.

I bought an open box return from Sam's with no box. I was able to fit the 42" in my backseat standing up. With the box? I don't think so.

I had a Saturn ION three years ago when I first bought my 42" plasma and it fit fine in the backseats. I have heard you are not suppose to lay your plasma on its side for very long, so I'd try setting it upright on the backseats if possible.

Heres another "yes it can be done" post.

I bought a 42" westinghouse from bestbuy. I was able to stand it upright just fine without the box in my backseat. My car is a Saturn ION 2 sedan. I don't think a Coupe will have much problem though.

Out of the box, maybe - but not likely. When I bought my 50", we had to take it out of the box to fit it into my brother in law's Murano, and even then it was on an angle and my wife had to sit on the floor in the box to keep it from bouncing around.

shouldnt the packaging of the box protect it from that?

You can rent a truck from Home Depot or Lowe's for $20 for 75 minutes.

Yep. Think of it this way: if you can't fit a full sheet of drywall in your car, you can't fit a 42" flat screen box either.
