Will HSF off a 5000+ work on a Athlon II X3 425 2.7GHZ?

I have a chance to swap CPU's in my HTPC for basically like $20.00.

I thought it would be a small upgrade to go from the 5000+ to the X3 425.

My question is this....the X3 I can purchase has no HSF with it. Can I use the retail HSF off my 5000+ with it fine?

Most likely yes. I mean, it should physically fit, and the X3 is a 45nm CPU, so it should run comparatively cooler than the older CPUs. But it's a triple core (actually, a quad-core with one disabled), so that adds to the thermals. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try it.

Do you have the original Windsor 5000+ or the newer Brisbane? The 435 is a 95W TDP chip and the Windsor is an 89W TDP chip, so you should be fine with the stock Windsor HSF. The Brisbane was one a 65W TDP chip, so its stock cooler may not be up to the task.

I splurged and ordered a Phenom X4 945 Processor Retail instead.

Overkill for a HTPC, but I should be safe from upgrades for a while for it.

Bought a new nmedia 5000b case as well to put everything in.

Stock HSFs are terrible, very few are good. Just spend 25 dollars and go for after market coolers. Your CPU will thank you in the long run.
