Will homework ever be welcomed by students?

Because of the ever increasing amounts of information that the average student needs to consume, teachers have turned to homework as the solution to the insufficient amount of time provided in school to teach. Of course, this is not the only reason why homework is given but it is certainly a big one.
I was wondering, homework has always been conceived as more of a burden to students than a tool of education. Is it possible for a teacher to give assignments that most students will want to complete?

That is the only class we have ever done more hw then what is required. :Q

Errr... yeah but lets say a subject such as History where the usual homework is to read a chapter or two in a thick textbook and then answer questions...

i dont think that students will ever welcome homework...i know i definitely won't, just because of the simple fact that some people need homework to learn, and some dont...i think that the people that dont need the homework to learn (like myself) shouldnt have to do it...we also shouldnt have to put up with being in classes with people that dont have the same mental ability...it really frustrates me when the school wont separate kids according to ability because they say its discriminating...i think thats BS

Actually, I sometimes like having to finish a C++ program at home. Sometimes I don't thou. Other than that, homework is useless by all means. Our school's teachers don't give much homework, they like to lecture; which helps me get "into" the subject 1000% better than stupid homework assignments.

Better get use to it if you want to continue with higher education. For every hour of lecture, there's 2-3 hrs of 'homework'.

But homework isn't meaningless... it's just another tool in teaching. Why spend 4 hrs lecturing on something, when you really need only 1 hr of lecture, and 3 hrs of practice (such as in math). So the teacher gives 1 hr of lecture, and you take 3 hrs home to practice those questions... would you rather do those 3 hrs of work in class? If you did, then classes would be much longer.

But in college/university, 'homework' is a bit different. Now you're actually self-learning the material, and when you come to class, it's a rehash of what you've read in hopes you'll understand stuff from the lecture that you missed in the text. Or if you're writing a paper, that's just a different tool in the learning process.

And yes, i kinda do like 'homework'. I LOVE writing essays, and learning overall... and homework is just learning at your own pace and time (i won't deny it, there are times when i'm just burnt out and hate it).

You definately hit the nail on the head, Eng. I too think that a lot of homework is caused simply by the expansion of human knowledge, and what people "want" you to know, over what you "need" to know. In short, homework will never be welcomed by students, since it's an unfair system(unlike a job, you can't quit; and hardly reflects the typical 30ish job, where you don't have very many times where you lose out home life to work) in which the relivence can be argued. In many cases, the work would at least be lighter for some if a policy were followed where there were more grades in the age of school, or kids were branched off into their best field at an earlier age(instead of mid college, say early to mid high-school), so that they wouldn't have to work on something that would most likely offer the least to them(Does a CS student really need a coruse in Chemistry or British literature?). While it definately closes some doors early, the other option is attempting to infuse much of the knowledge of man into people at a rate that ultimately will become unhealthy.

I don't think there is ever homework you want to do. There is homework that you enjoy while you are doing it or that you are glad you did once it's done, but I never really want to do it. Still, I do do it and I'm probably better off doing it than not. You don't learn anything in Algebra 2 if you don't do some algebra.

BTW, this is coming from a sophomore in high school.

I have never liked homework before, but this year I'm taking Cisco Networking and I'm actually studying ahead of the class on Cisco's online site for students. Its got everything we need for CCNA except the hands on experience, I think its great.

homework is a breeze especially with the internet, omg i cant remember how many times the internet has saved me throughout highschool. Sometimes i think what the hell i would do without it, how did people get by before there was any internet? it doesnt seem feasable!

I do not really hate homework even though it is boring because i know the HW is talored to the tests my the teachers. so if i dothe homework then i would do goodon the tests.

I think that seems to be the concensus... that college/university homework is a bit more enjoyable than highschool. In highschool, you're doing more rote work as homework (VERY few ppl enjoy this), and in college/university, it's self-learning (LOTS of ppl enjoy learning things, especially things they're interested in... you're more likely to enjoy your classes since you picked them and you're paying through your nose for them).
