So Harvey Danger released their third cd a couple days ago on bit torrent and as a direct download. The idea is that you'll download it and buy it if you like it, or at the very least donate some money to them. It seems like the sort of thing everyone was looking for in music downloads, free and you only need to pay if you want too. I really don't think this is going to work because it's banking on the fact that people are greedy by nature...and well they really are. Anyone else think this is doomed to failure?

who is greedier, fans of a band or the RIAA and the studios that would take the cut had it been released normally?

as music fans, if we knew what was good for us we would make SURE this works out well... it will only encourage other artists in the future

The cd is pretty good, at least i like it but i've always liked them.

I really hope it works but most of the people I know would just buy it and be like cool free stuff.

I only ever heard their one big single. But for free, I might be willing to check this one out.

Never knowingly heard any of their stuff, but for free I am willing to try it. If I like it well enough, I will buy it. If not, I will delete it.

It won't work.

The only people who will pay anything significant are die-hard fans of the band.

You're forcing people to quantify, of their own accord, how MUCH they like the album.

How many are going to say, "I like this album $14 worth"?
Most are going to say... "Meh, it's ok, I'll give them a couple of bucks... I'll paypal them when I get around to it.."

I can almost guarantee you heard "Flagpole Sitta" unless you spend 1998 in a coma.

I agree with what they are doing in principle, it's a very brave move. I donated some money the other day. I hope it works out for Harvey Danger!
