Will eSports ever become as popular as regular sports?

It seems like step by step, online gaming is growing. Many Counter-Strike matches are now aired online via HLTV, with hundreds of spectators watching. I've seen HALO2 tournaments several times on TV--and even Madden can be watched on television.

I recently heard that DirecTV is going to be airing certain Counter-Strike matches On-Demand in the near future.

Do you guys think eSports will ever become anywhere near as big as real sports? With the best players known world wide, and their every game anticipated and watched?

No, but it will become a bigger and more accepted part of mainstream culture. The DirecTV deal is a step in the right direction.

edit: The top Starcraft players in Korea have been pop culture icons for years, so it's not out of the question.

I say no, because I think most people will outgrow 'eSports' while it's a totally different thing with 'regular' sports.

no

Esports can definitely become more popular. But no chance for it to become as popular. A think a goal for esports to shoot for is to become as popular as poker.

Yeah kids will play online gaming but they'll move on. Same goes for the audience. While you hear of people going to their first sports game as a little kid and continuing to do so till their death, you'll never see that with online gaming.

True, but there will always be a large demographic of players, and a large demographic for audience. 1 goes out, 2 come in.
