Never had Durian but it supposedly reeks and doesn't taste too good. Supposedly tastes like raw mushy onions. Here's on food tasting vid on it.

the inside. Once you crack that bad boy open, you will notice it. It's not horrid like a bathroom smell, but after about a few minutes, you really get sick of it.

What's up with the onion taste? Is that right? I suspect if they have it around here, it'll be frozen. Maybe that messes up the flavor? After watching that video, I want to go to the Asian market and buy a bunch of stuff. Green bean ice cream?? I wonder what other culinary treasures lurk on the forgotten back shelves :^D

They sell durian in the market across the street from my house. I've been tempted to pick one up to try, but don't really know what to do with it once I get it.

Maybe I'll do some lernin' about how to get at it and enjoy it, and then I'll do a little photodocumentary of my first experience with durian fruit and post it on ATOT.

People in Hong Kong and Southern China love it. At least some Chinese love durian.

Malaysia has a large Chinese population. So they might either come from there originally or have family ties there.

I can get lots of durian products at an asian supermarket near my house. Fresh ones, chips, icecream, and other stuff. My great-grandmother lived in Indonesia for a long time and always spoke about how nice durian was. So when I found it at that supermarket I got some durian 'cake' for my mother. We opened it... Not only the smell was awful, but the stuff tasted like it smells! (we both tried a tiny bit) Found out that that cake was meant as food additive, not as food in itself

Haven't gotten around to trying the icecream yet, but the chips are nice.
