Got a dell Inspirion 1501 for my mom. Not a bad laptop for the price (Sempron 3500+, 1 gig ram, DVD burner, 80 gig HD for $630 after taxes). It feels a little flimsy..but I shouldnt expect much for a budget laptop. Anyways, I didnt get any extended service plan or anything. This laptop came with XP Home installed and some other crappy software (Dell support, Norton internet firewall, etc). I have XP pro (legit). Would Dell void the standard 1 year warranty if I uninstall all their crap and start my own fresh installation?

It shouldn't be but I wouldn't put it past them. I've heard of someone's warranty being voided because they reinstalled the os.

The warranty is on the hardware. They'll stop offering you support for your Windows install, but you should always be able to get replacement parts for a hardware problem.
