Will daily running, weight lifting and low carb eating = rapid weight loss

Today is the day that I start eating healthy again (I finally got my kitchen back after being under construction for remodelling) so to really get things moving along I'm going to go for a run after work and throw the weights around. I would like to do this at least 5-6 times per week, I'm just really hoping that I lose weight fairly quickly. I'd like to be able to take off around 40-50 pounds in a 2 1/2-3 month time frame. Is this a realistic goal?

Edit: I should also mention that while I do need to lose some pounds I'm still in decent shape, I can still manage to run a mile or two without collapsing and I've maintained a lot of the muscle I built up when I used to bodybuild. I just need to get rid of my spare tire. 😱

You will loose weight quick if you keep your schedule, but that is an incredibly tough goal to reach... do you understand how much 50 pounds is?:Q Make sure you stick to your schedule and hopefully you will be happy in 3 months.

Good luck.

If you exercise that much, yes. The important thing is to exercise to get your metabolism going.

A friend of mine lost 30 pounds in 4 months without excercising following the Atkins diet. I don't know how healthy that is though, make sure you read the book and consult a doctor before trying anything like this.

I noticed they sell the book at Costco, probably about your best bet for cost...

Good luck,

joel

It will take a while for real weight loss to start happening. You have to build up your metabolism, which will take some time to change. Once it does, then just keep excersing and keep your caloric intake the same, and you'll lose weight. I doubt that you can lose 50 pounds that fast though.

Heathly weight loss would be around 10-15 pounds a month. Any more than that and you are shocking the system too hard.

if you keep at it and eat a very low carb diet, you will definately lose a lot of weight fast. You can't bullshit yourself. Weightraining is like 70% diet. You have all the ingredients for rapid weight loss, its up to you to stick to them. You'll end up losing a lot of water weight first, then a relatively steady loss of pounds. Your goal of 50lbs in 3 months is a bit high, but it never hurts to aim high. by the time 3 months rolls around, you will gotten rid of most of the weight on your fat ass. But this is only going to work if you stick to it. and educate yourself. Let me whip up some articles on t-mag to help you out.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm really hoping this works out for me. I plan on getting back into all the activities I used to do before I got married (biking, basketball, softball). I think my biggest problem is my diet, before I got married I used to eat like a horse but I used to work like one too. Well you know how things go when you first get married, I was a strict christian back then so the wife and I did'nt have sex til after we got married. As you can imagine after the wedding you could'nt drag us out of the bedroom with a shotgun pointed at our heads. When I finally emerged to the outside world again I was lets just say a little fluffy. Anyway I've been working hard on trying to change my diet and now that I can cook again it should be MUCH easier.

2 lbs per week is generally acknowledged as the "healthy" max weight loss rate.

I've heard that said before but is'nt that just an estimate? Kinda like when they have those charts that tell you what your target weight should be if you're this tall and that age.

If you way overweight, I *beleive* you have a bit more room to work with. Meaning - a 6' 300 pound guy can stand to loose a few more pounds a month than a 6' 200 pound guy. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you're right on that one. They also say 2lbs per week because if you lose too much weight too fast, you end up with stretch marks and loose skin, depending on how much weight you lose.

if you're losing more than 2lb a week you're losing more than fat, (yes, muscle.).

i recommend you follow something like body for life.. its a good step for learning about your body, nutrition, weight lifting and cardio.. probalby open you up to more things.. thats what i did

The key to exercising to lose weight is to be consistent, stick with it, and NOT overdo it or burn yourself out.

I'd start with 4 days a week, max. Any more, and you'll likely burn yourself out, or worse, cause an injury. The key is to workout SMART.

For running, I STRONGLY suggest an excellent program I did to get you up to a 3 mile run. It's called the "Couch to 5K" program, and it's really painless. By the time you've finished it, you'll have lost a significant amount of weight, and be fit.

Find it here

Also, you don't want to weight train the same muscle group two days in a row. It's counter productive.

A realistic goal is 2-3 pounds a week, maximum. Lose weight any faster and you'll be losing muscle weight.

Well I just finished up my run for the day. I'm more out of shape than I thought, I only did a mile and I did'nt run it straight through. What I did do though was run for about 2-3 minutes at more than a jog but less than a sprint and then I walked for about 2-3 minutes. I'm currently having a meal of baked fish and spinach (low carbs and fat). In another hour or two I'll start doing a little upper body training.

Now if I can just keep this up for the next 40-50 years....
