Will D-VHS catch on?

I say no Slaimus, as the prices of HD's keep going down, I see Tivo & ReplayTV replacing VRC-Style decks for good :)

Interesting. I've never heard of this before. How long has it been around? I think it would be weird to start going back to tape after the wild popularity of DVDs. Edit: and PVR duh

You can find D-VHS decks closer to $550 which probably isn't that much for anyone who has the money to buy HD equipment. Until blu-ray makes it over, D-VHS is the only available consumer tech for HD recording other than a htpc with an HDTV tuner. Current recordable dvd's don't have the capacity for recording full length HD movies.

Yep, been around for a while.

The biggest advantage is the ability to view HD movies as well or record HD.

Most believe it is a niche product that will be replaced by recordable HD-DVD.

Not really, its more of a niche market type thing. It is awesome quality, but unless you're a videophile you won't go throwing all that money around on a D-VHS player. I would if I could, but being a poor college student it doesn't really fit in my budget.

The problem with a tape is that you lose the ability to scan quickly, and the tape will deform over time.

true, but you might not care if your just recording tv shows on a tape you just keep writing over again. will have to see if the blueray hddvds get reasonably cheap:p

It might for video editing......but for home use probably not. Its linear...can't jump around like a DVD.

PVR has limited recording capacity. The size of the HD is the killer. Can you back off PVR to pc? Don't think so............
