Will crossfire work on any dual graphics motherboard?

Just wondering, if you could put two ati cards on a non-crossfire mobo (such as a sli mobo, a server motherboard, or by modding a slot on the motherboard to take a large video card), would crossfire work? Or do the drivers actually check for the presence of a crossfire compatible chipset?
