just curious. i really would like to live 3-15 miles out of town. no more than 15. just want more space to work with 🙂 but i couldn't live with dialup either!

It doesn't pay for cable or phone companies to run lines out into rural areas. The reason why people in Asia have 100mbit lines is because theres so many people in such a large area, that its extremely cost-effective.

Most of the rural areas around here are getting DSL (finally)... we live about 5 miles from the nearest village... the RT we're attached to is scheduled to get a DSLAM this spring... the RTs all around us already have DSLAMs installed.... I don't know why they decided to just ignore the area that this RT serves....

i live in the country and have HSI. roadrunner to be exact.

so yeh, it's happening. soon enough it'll all be wireless.

I live in the country and have cable access.
We're in "Adelphia Country". We were one of the very first people in west central PA to have broadband.
We're situated between DuBois and Punxsutawney. Punxsutawney hosts the hub. We used to be served out of Buffalo, NY and the service was pretty touch and go. Once the new hub came online, the service has been excellent.
It's only about 80 bucks a month for cable, broadband and long distance telephone service. The long distance is at a special rate for having the package and cut our long distance bill to a tenth of what it had been.

We live 13 miles from the nearest town and that town is a town of 2700 people. The largest city within 30 miles is a city of 18,000. St. Louis County is 47 miles away....

We have a choice of 3 speeds of DSL and/or Cable and/or many dial up companies......

Count me in the rural club with DSL. We got it a year ago...we're about 20 miles from the nearest "big city", which is only 25,000 people. My town is <3500. We're several miles from the nearest busy street, so it can happen. I can't even get cable TV because my street is fairly long and has only 4 houses on it, and I can't get DirecTV because the government has deemed that I should only receive Dish Network. So if you wonder why I LOVE Bellsouth, put yourself in my shoes and you might understand. 3Mbps DSL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> dialup+satellite.

One of my old Bosses lives out in the middle of no where SC and has DSL with no problems (over an hour from where we worked). You should be able to find somewhere with DSL/Cable access.

i live in the country (20 miles from Palm Springs) on a dirt road - "horse property" . . . Verizon doesn't care to offer us DSL and cable isn't on our road . . . . so it's satellite or a dial-up dual-modem/2 paralled phone lines - 2x56k. 😛

but i wouldn't live in a city for anything. 😉

I live in BFE and luckily enough there is a good wireless provider in the nearest town. Usually I get around 1.2 mbs... I am paying $29 a month for it too. 😀

I believe Verizon and SBC or whatever regional phone company is bringing Fiber optics to rural/ suburban area.

Because it is lower cost then build a station for DSL. You guys are lucky when you get it.

I read this on the Times by the way.

I live pretty far out in the country (cows outnumber people, nearest shopping center/mall is over half an hour away) and we've had cable for years.
