Will Chicago Midway Airport be renamed after Obama?

It appears there is a push to rename Midway Airport after Obama.

Does anyone see this happening? I find it more likely than renaming O'Hare, since the O'Hare name is just too world famous across the globe to be renamed, and would probably face a lot of controversy and backlash as did the renaming of the Sears Tower to the Willis Tower. Plus, Midway is located closer to Obama's home.

I wonder though if it will be named exclusively after Obama, or if it will be a dual-named airport. Perhaps it could be called Chicago Obama-Midway Airport.

No, Midway is too crappy an airport to carry the Obama name.

But O'Hare is far too world famous to be renamed, so I don't see it happening. Perhaps Honolulu International could be another choice of an airport to carry Obama's name? Plus, Obama's home on the South Side is closer to Midway than it is to O'Hare (which is on the Northwest Side).

O'Hare is not that famous, most people have no idea who O'hare is, and probably half of the ones who do think it has to do with "Gone with the Wind" actress. O'bama > O'hare 🙂 I mean they renamed the Sears tower, and the sky didn't fall.

The person isn't famous, but the airport is. There was a LOT of backlash when the Sears Tower was renamed, and the City of Chicago probably doesn't want a repeat of that. Plus, O'Hare is located on the mostly white Northwest Side. The LOCALS who live there would probably be opposed.

Yeah, but no one remembers the new name. Willet Tower?

To be fair: O'Hare was a WW2 fighter ace, so I wouldn't yank his name from an airport quite so casually.

I'm not in Skorpi0's camp, though. I feel Obama's name could be attached to something big in the area. He did accomplish a lot, even if Trump is basically trying to undo as much progress as he can get away with (and the progress of Presidents from the past few decades, for that matter).

Plus, the O'Hare name is internationally recognized since it is a major international hub. That seems like a very good reason NOT to change its name. Midway not so much.

Who? No.
Best president of the 21st century vs some pilot who may have been a cool guy, but no one has ever heard of. I think O in ORD can easily stand for Obama, completely seamless transition.
Maybe name Midway for Hillary, she is from Chicago too, IIRC.
Park Ridge, irrc. A nw suburb of Chicago.

They renamed IAH after Bush I and Washington National after Reagan, so I don't see what the big deal would be about.

Presidents usually get the main airport in a city named after them, not secondary ones.
JFK, Reagan, Bush, etc.
Also, having two airports in a city start with O would be confusing.
So I am guessing either he gets O'hare renamed after him, or he'll get Honolulu named after him, but I doubt he wants Midway.

Um, Dulles is the main international hub of the Washington D.C. area. Reagan didn't actually have more traffic until recently, however, it is still a domestic hub.
