Will changing the Wireless Channel on my Router help w/ disconnects?!

Hey guys just installed by D-Link 614+ Router and I've connecting to it using a 802.11b MS USB Adapter. I'll get disconnects here and there and its really annoying. I was wondering if setting the channels will improve my connections? The default is 6...but I'm hesistant to change it...cuz my setup seems really finicky in that if I change any settings I can't seem to connect anymore and I always have to reset my router. Any help or suggestions would help. Distance is not an issue my router is only a room away. Thanks guys~

Are you running 98 or XP? And is there anything in your house that also uses 2.4ghz stuff - cordless phones, possibly cell phones? Oh yea one - did your cable/dsl connection come with software that you installed on the computer that is hardwired? I found with my Verizon DSL that for some odd reason or another, whenever I disable the software (some IPmonitor/lan util and Motive Smartbridge) that my wireless connection would constantly drop. It wouldn't matter if the main computer was off, on suspend, etc.

I recently installed XP on the wireless computer and have yet to try running it with the default software turned off though. I've found that XP has better networking/wireless capabilities, so if it's an option try putting XP onto your wireless computer.

im actually already running windows xp and i'm not running any verizon software either....i do have a cell phone and cordless phone in the same room as the router though

I had a heck of a time getting mine to work properly until I followed DLinks setup. It is pretty detailed and if you follow it you will not have these problems. The main problem seems to be the WinXP "Zero Config option" I just noticed you said you have an MS wireless adapter. Did it come with any software to set up the station ID etc.? Many people on here say to use the zero config option instead of the software that comes with the adapter but I would always get random disconnects untill I disabled that service.

It is built in to xp, and it is easy to use that instead of the software you install with the adapter. As pointed out above, it does not always work well, though.

Yes it will...depending upon what may or may not be interfering with your Ap and client card (if anyhting at all).
I find in my home that channel 3 works best, my negihbors have a 2.4 phone on channel 11 and it kills me when they use it.
