Will changing drive letters in Disc Manager mess things up?

The partition my pc boots from is the E: drive which is my hard drive. In disc manager I'd like to change the E: to a C: but am worried that things will get messed up some how. The E: currently has Windows and all of my programs on it, will changing it to C: mess up any associations or anything else?

query over at the MS Kbase for these keywords:

mounteddevices
userinit.exe

The short answer is yes, you can do it but it WILL mess some things up. You'll need to replace every instance of C: in your registry with your drive letter. You miss one and stuff will break. The first instance of C: you'll have to change is that userinit value.

Query on those keywords and you should find several related articles.

It's generally more of a PIA to fix than to rebuild.

yep
Not to mention after you get everything running all fine and dandy, 3 months down the road *another* path issue will crop up.

Just curious . . . how did E:\ get to be your boot drive in the first place? What happened to C:\?

Why the desire to change the drive's letter?

Lots of peeps have their OS(s) on drives with a letter other than "C", it works fine.
