Will cell phones replace cameras?

What do ya'll think? I saw the likes of Nokia, LG, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung drop 8 megapixel phones. Then Sony Ericsson also dropped the Idou a 12 megapixel camera built in.

My current celly only does 2 megapixels and the pix come out tiny. My Sony digie is a 7 megapixel and it feels like a foreign object in my pocket opposite of my phone. It would be awesome to be able to take a quality pic on the fly.

Perhaps one day they may replace lower end P&S, but the quality of the optics is still crap, and so are the photos taken by it as you can see.

That was not a good question at all. For someone like you I HIGHLY recommend reading a great deal before posting new threads. Image quality has nothing to do with pixel count, except in a negative manner.
For really small sensors, higher pixel count actually decreases the quality. That Sony with the 12 megapixels is a prime example. Its pictures will stink.

No, they will never replace cameras, they arent even replacing low-end cameras now. People who are currently using the cameras on their phones are folks who would never carry around a camera. They are just using it because its convenient. Some folks still like small, cheap cameras to carry around in their pockets for family gatherings or ball games.

And there are still assloads of professionals who wont settle for anything less than a digital SLR, which has the kind of image quality no phone will ever be able to touch. You would do better to take one of those and try to shoe-horn in a cell phone rather than the other way around.

LOL. I'd hate to carry my Canon DSLR/phone around every day. Though, if it took a sim card and had bluetooth to connect to headset, it wouldn't be so bad as a backup phone.

There are limits on what is possible due to physics. You trade off quality when you try to jam pack it into something really small that was not primarily made to take pictures in the the first place.
