If I look up a car on carfax which has a salvage title, will carfax tell me the reason it was salvaged or simply state that is has a salvage title?

will not tell you directly why but in some cases there was enough to apply common sense.

for example i've seen some go as follow.

6/1/2001- police report filed, car in accident, side impact.
6/26/2001- salvage titled issued.

sometimes they go into detail and sometimes its just accident reported. I never saw it tell me side impact, airbags deployed car was t-boned type of deal. But you should know front, rear or side aleast.

Salvage title means for sure the accident is on record, and usually those accident reports on carfax and such at least tell you the side it was on. Every one I saw said where the impact was and what hit it (or what it hit).

Stolen cars also end up with salvage titles, depending on the state and how long it took to be recovered.
