I have a valid legit never used key for Call of Duty 4 but no installation dvd. If I download an iso from someplace will I be able to play it online using my key or do I need to find someone's retail disc to copy?

The latest set of patches removes the disc check. I dont see why this wouldnt work but let us know if you got into multiplayer games.

You'll be fine, if what rdaubner says is true (about cd checks) then you'll have absolutely no problems in either single-player or multi-player; if it's not, then you'll have to use a no-cd crack or mini-image for singleplayer but that's about it.

Multiplayer will work exactly the same as a legal copy in both cases.

Yes, there's no cd check for multiplayer. For single player, you'd need a no-cd crack.

Ok thanks. Why do downloaded games need a no cd/dvd crack anyway? Is it because the copy protection on the original discs actually works? If so I am kinda surprised because seems like every other kind of copy protection has been defeated.

They are defeated... using the cracks. The only time copy protections were "defeated" was back in the old days when copy protections put fake "errors" on a CD. You could have burned these bad "fake" errors on a CD and the CD would have been the same as the original and played without a crack. You can't do this anymore as the copy protections are more advanced now.

Every copy protection gets defeated.... maybe a few weeks later or in the same day of the protection release...
